Retail Pioneer DVR-109/A09 feedback on DVRflash 2.1 (w/firmware extraction tip)
Yesterday's news had a note on the release of DVRflash v2.1 (http://lasvegas.rpc1.org/DVRFlash_v2.1.zip), which now fully supports updating even retail Pioneer DVR-109 drives (aka A09, XL, etc. models). I asked for feedback from retail 109 owners on using it and about half-dozen readers sent word it worked fine. Here's a sample mail that includes a tip on unpacking the PC downloads to get the firmware files without having to use Stuffit Expander v8 or later:

" Hey Mike,
I just wanted to let you know that I was able to use the 1.57 firmware and DVRflash 2.1 to update my DVR-A09 retail drive. Thanks for the tip -- it's sure easier than pulling the drive and installing it in a PC!. (the previous OS X flasher linked here only updated OEM 109 drives) Everything seems to work, though I haven't burned any DVDs since.

One tip that I wanted to offer... when you see a .EXE that you suspect is just a self-extracting archive, you can often use unzip from within terminal to unzip it. In this case, the FW157EU.EXE is a valid .ZIP archive, that contains the PC extractor code (which OS X's unzip ignores) in the header. It's always worth a shot (even on a PC, where it's generally safer to run the unzip program that's on your hard drive than an arbitrary executable downloaded from the web). For example:

(using terminal with the EXE file in the same directory (defaults to your user home). example uses > to represent the terminal command prompt.-Mike)

    > unzip DVRA09_FW157EU.EXE

    (The above is all you need to type. Text below is just the output text in the terminal after running unzip-Mike)
    Archive: DVRA09_FW157EU.EXE
    ;The comment below contains SFX script commands

    Path=C:\DVRA09\FW157EU
    SavePath
    Setup=UPGA09
    Overwrite=1
    Title=Pioneer Advanced Model F/W1.57
    inflating: R9143009.157
    inflating: R9143109.157
    inflating: UPGA09.exe

Hope this helps. Thanks again for the amazing site.
-Darrell"

I don't have Stuffit 8 installed on most Macs here (I avoided updating past v7.x, for reasons I won't go into again), so this is useful for extracting the firmware files to use with Mac OS flashers.

Tiger / Modem reports page updated (w/tip)
I've updated the previous page of Tiger dialup modem reports with 2 more reader mails from yesterday. One included a note/tip about a proxy setting:

" Mike, I own a 15" Powerbook 1.6Ghz w/ 128MB Video Card. Upgraded to Tiger, lost my Dial-up modem when using Safari, (all others such as Mail, and FTP have worked fine). I thought that my computer was part of this dial-up modem fiasco and I have been waiting for a fix. After updating w/ 10.4.2 Combo, and still having problems with Safari and my Dial-up, I went to the Apple Store Genius bar today. Turns out that my problem has been with Web Proxy (HTTPS) that was checked. It is found under System Preferences / Network / Proxies. Once this was unchecked, Safari worked with my Dial-up.
Web Proxy (HTTPS) is what my ISP uses for "Web Accelerator". This has been the trouble the whole time!
The Genius at the bar, said that he has seen this as causing trouble and does not recommend using it...
-Brent T."

If anyone else with a Tiger modem problem finds this helps let me know.

CDRW/CD/DVD/Hard Drive/Cardreader Compatibility Database Update Listing
The Drive Compatibility Database had 2 new reports added. (Entries later today are added the next newsday morning.) The database includes reports on CDRWs, Combo DVD-CDRW, DVD-ROM, DVD Burners, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, ORB, ZIP, MO drives, NAS, CF/Smartmedia readers, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, IDE RAID cards, SATA, Firewire, SCSI, USB, adapters). Current total - 14,914 reports. (searching by drive type/brand, mac model etc. listed below will show the full reports, most recent first - does not include updates to previous reports) iApps burn support mentioned in reports unless otherwise noted.

    DVD+R/RW + DVD-R/RW Drives:
  • IDE Pioneer DVR-K04L (8x) in Powerbook G4 (OS X 10.4)
    (native Apple support, but complained of low write speeds. IIRC some others noted the same thing and that some brands of media helped a bit.)

    Hard Drives:
  • IDE Seagate ST9100823A-RK 100GB in Mac Mini (OS X 10.4)

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches). For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc.
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)

Rate Your CPU Upgrade Reports Database Updated
The Rate Your CPU Upgrade database has been updated with 1 new report (entries later today are added the next newsday morning). Total to date: 9,999. Here's a summary of the report added (search by brand/mac model for full reports - latest reports always shown first):

  • Powerlogix G4/900MHz in (Sawtooth) G4/AGP (rated 1)

    (Full reviews of G4 and G3 upgrades compared to stock CPUs, including real world apps/game tests, install info, etc. are linked at the CPU upgrades page. OC/CPU module articles are on the Systems page.)

(Warning - Overclocking may not be reliable and could lead to hardware failure or corrupted data.) You can find the full reports by searching the database selecting the indicated Mac model and upgrade card brand/type. If you've upgraded the CPU on your Mac, please post an entry in the database. Search the database for entries from most every upgradable Mac model *before* you buy. (Searchable by mac model/upgrade brand).
