| Review of ViewSonic's 9 Million Pixel LCD Display |
A reader sent a note that there's a review of Viewsonic's 22.2in LCD display with more than twice the pixels of the 30in Apple Display. The review mentions the pixel density means that it's
not really useable for text though. (£4,600+ list per the review page, although web searches today show prices as "low" as $5,771.84.) Viewsonic's VP2290b Display page notes it supports both 3840x2400 and 1920x1200 modes/resolutions (although if 1920x1200 mode scales to full screen I wonder if it's like most LCDs, where running less than native resolution makes the image less sharp.) The Viewsonic page has links to
Compatible video cards which surprisingly lists even the Mac ATI 8500 card as "able to
display 3840x2400" (?). (The display comes with a dual DVI cable but notes only one is used in their mac 8500 setup guide. The 8500 has one DVI and one VGA (analog) port). Like most current ATI cards I've seen, ATI lists on the 8500 specs page that 1600x1200 is the max for digital DVI mode.:
Digital Flat Panel Maximum resolution
1600 x 1200 60Hz
Even the list of Analog resolutions for the 8500 tops out at 2048x1536. (Update - an owner of this display wrote that it does work at very low refresh rates with some older Mac cards, despite the specs. However he said none of the cards compatible with the G5 can run this display, although some in his older macs can. Tomorrow's news page will have his comments on this display, which reportedly is made by IBM.)
Of course the cost of this display (and the Apple 30in - $3299 + $599 for the 6800 card, which only runs in a G5) is out of the price range for most of us, but the review was still an interesting read on the highest resolution commercially available LCD display I've seen to date.

| OEM Radeon Enabler 1.1.1 adds 9800XT/9600XT and OEM Radeon AGP Support |
| The author of (OEM) Radeon Enabler sent a note last night that he's released a v1.1.1 update. (Radeon Enabler adds ATI 4.2.x Displays "3D/GL Overrides" support for Radeon/Radeon Mobility OEM models, where normally only retail Radeon cards are supported.)
"
Radeon Enabler 1.1.1 has been released.
This version adds support for the following graphics chipsets:
- OEM Radeon 9800 XT
- OEM Radeon 9600 XT
- OEM Radeon AGP (7200)
Additional enhancements include:
Improved detection of missing or corrupted localization resources
Enhanced the support file generation to include more detailed
information from the System Profiler
This version does not add any additional functionality for previously
supported cards. (See the website for the full listing, including Radeon Mobility chips) If you have already used Radeon Enabler successfully for your chipset, there is no need to update to this latest version.
IMPORTANT
If you have already used a previous version of Radeon Enabler, you must
reinstall the ATI Radeon Displays package before you can use a newer version
of Radeon Enabler. Radeon Enabler will only recognize an original, unpatched
installation.
For more information and to download Radeon Enabler, visit the Radeon
Enabler website at http://www.radeonenabler.com ." |

| DeathBall UT2004 Mod |
| (from a reader post)
"
For those who haven't tried it yet - its the most fun you'll ever have. Its
just like football/soccer. Definitely give this one a whirl.
Head on over to: Deathball for the mod download.
-Salsa"
I've not tried this mod personally, but they have a page about the game with some screenshots and info on play. Here's a clip:
"DeathBall turns UT2004 into a mix of Football/Soccer, Rugby, Handball and War. It's a pure sports game, and at that a First Person Sports Game. It's based on UT2004, but it has nothing to do with a shooter." |

You can find the full reports by searching the database selecting the indicated Mac model and upgrade card brand/type. If you've upgraded the CPU on your Mac, please post an entry in the database. Search the database for entries from most every upgradable Mac model *before* you buy. (Searchable by mac model/upgrade brand). | CDRW/CD/DVD/Hard Drive/Cardreader Compatibility Database Update Listing |
| The Drive Compatibility Database had 3 new reports added this morning. (Reader entries from Tuesday, entries today are added the next newsday morning. Entries with no comments, missing info etc. are not posted). The database includes reports on Combo DVD-CDRW, CDROMs, DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD+R, CDRW, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, ORB, ZIP, MO drives, CF/Smartmedia readers, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, IDE RAID cards, Firewire, SCSI, USB, adapters). Current total 13,269 reports. (searching by drive type/brand, mac model etc. listed below will show the full reports, most recent first - does not include updates to previous reports)
You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
