| Quicktime 6 Released, Note to QT Pro 5 Users |
Apple's main front page notes that Quicktime 6 is now available. (Mac OS X v10.1.3 or later, OS 8.6/9.x, Windows) Get it at http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/. (Thanks to Jof for the heads-up.)
For current Quicktime Pro Users (who bought the QT Pro 5 key) here's a note on the requirements page:
Note to QuickTime Pro Users:
QuickTime 6 will replace older versions of QuickTime. A QuickTime 6 Pro key is required to unlock Pro functionality in QuickTime 6. If you wish to use a QuickTime 4 or 5 Pro key, you need to run an older version of QuickTime. Prior versions of QuickTime are available in our Technical Support area.
I know the QT5 Pro key worked with the QT6 betas, but apparently not with the official QT6 release version.

Dallas, TX -July 15, 2002 - MacPlay, a subsidiary of United Developers, announced today that the Macintosh version of Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix(tm) is available for pre-order on the MacPlay website at www.MacPlay.com.
Developed by Raven Software, Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix drops players into the ranks of America's shadow soldiers in a gritty and intense battle for survival. "PC gamers are getting a little bit of a head start over their Mac peers, but it wonÌt be long before both camps are battling it out in lush Columbian jungles and Siberian wastelands."
Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix is built on an enhanced version of the Quake III Arena(tm) game engine for explosive special effects and fast action gameplay, GHOUL II Technology with ultra-realistic damage modeling anywhere on the body, the TORR Terrain system that allows a full range of player movements including manning entrenched guns and riding in vehicles, and even deadlier AI than the original game.

| 2002 iBook Owner Comments on Running Dual Displays |
| (from a reader email)
"Hi Mike,
when I got my new 700mhz iBook I noticed that under some conditions it
can display extra workspace on an external display.
I put up a website where you can find details:
http://www.macparts.de/ibook/
Cheers
Klaus"
Update - See the July 17th News Page for his latest comments.
His page has a photo showing an extended desktop. (Note: the 2nd screen's corrupted video is due to the fact he used a DV camera which is out of sync with the display.) I don't own an iBook (2002 model or otherwise) but if any readers that do figure out a mod to run dual displays let me know.
Since the Radeon Mobility chip in the 2002 iBooks (and the Rage128 Mobility in the 2001 iBooks) supports dual (not just mirrored) displays in Powerbooks, I'm not sure if there's a hardware mod or the ROM that enables this feature.

| (Updated) TechTV will not be Broadcasting MWNY Expo Keynote |
| The latest info
says TechTV will not be broadcasting the MWNY Keynote. Here's the latest info I have received as of July 16th (copy of mass email forwarded to me by Anthony Soroka). I wrote Cindy to verify the July 16th mail (below) was the final word and she said "Fraid so Mike. I sent a mass email to a bunch of you." The (bad news) noted in the mass mail follows:
"

Subject: Macworld Coverage
Mac Enthusiasts;
I, like you, have been wondering why there was nothing on our site about the MacWorld schedule. I've been bugging those in house every day, and getting told we plan to carry it, and are making arrangements.
I got the final word today.
I'm very sorry to tell you we are not carrying Steve Jobs Keynote from Mac World in New York on Wednesday. Apple will not allow us to air it live or in it's entirety. I was not given reasons, just told that. We will be doing stories on it during Tech Live. I know that's not much, but right now it is all we have to offer.
We had assumed we'd be covering it as in the past, and I was told to let you know we planned to. We DID try very hard to get this coverage for our Mac Enthusiasts.
I didn't want you all hunting around looking for the coverage, so am sending emails again to let you know.

| Newer Tech G4 CPU Upgrades for PB Wallstreet/Lombard, Beige/B&W G3 |
Newer Technology sent email press releases on announcements of G4/500 CPU upgrades for PowerBook G3 Wallstreet (1998) and Lombard (1999) models priced at $350. (Sightly higher than their Pismo/PB G3 2000 Firewire G4/500 upgrade which sells for $299.xx). For the original G3/233MHz Wallstreet PowerBooks that did not ship with L2 cache on the
CPU module, they offer the option to add 1MB of Level 2 cache at extra cost (not specified in the press release). They also announced G4 500MHz and 533MHz upgrades for PowerMac G3 Beige and B&W G3 series Macs starting at $299.

| OS X iTunes Plugin File for Lite-On 48x12x48x CDRW Drive |
Don Barron sent a copy of his modified Lite-On device plugin that enables OS X iTunes support for the Lite-On 48125W 48x12x48x CDRW drive. (He posted a drive database report on it used in a Firewire case with his Dual G4 system.) I've also added it to the FAQ's CDROM/CDR section for future reference.
NOTE: As with all modified files - these are provided "as-is" with no warranty or support. These files replace the existing files of the same name (use Sherlock to find the locations of the original files - and to avoid permissions issues in OS X you may want to boot into OS 9 to replace the OS X file.)
