| Info on Security fix in Airport Extreme Update 2007-001 |
| Although it wasn't mentioned on the Airport Exteme Update 2007-001 page last night, the update included a security fix, mentioned in Apple's new doc titled About the security content of AirPort Extreme Update 2007-001.

AirPort Extreme Update 2007-001...
AirPort
CVE-ID: CVE-2006-6292
Available for: Mac OS X v10.4.8, Mac OS X Server v10.4.8
Impact: Attackers on the wireless network may cause system crashes
Description: An out-of-bounds memory read may occur while handling wireless
frames. An attacker in local proximity may be able to trigger a system crash
by sending a maliciously-crafted frame to an affected system. This issue
affects the Core Duo version of Mac mini, MacBook, and MacBook Pro computers
equipped with wireless. Other systems, including the Core 2 Duo versions are
not affected. This update addresses the issue by performing additional
validation of wireless frames. Credit to LMH for reporting this issue.

| More notes on Mac Pro Firewire and FW Audio interfaces |
"I read about about MOTU interfaces having problems on Mac
Pros. (latest comments were in yesterday's news, although as mentioned there
not only Mac Pro users had problems - so did some PowerPC based Mac owners.-Mike) I found out through another route that Apple made an undocumented (or underdocumented) change to the Firewire implementation in the Mac Pro (only - doesn't affect other models
yet) that relates to Firewire audio interfaces like MOTU's. My Metric
Halo (mhlabs.com) Firewire interfaces suffered from this problem, and
the lead developer of Metric Halo wrote this on a public forum and
posted a beta version which solved it for me. (See below.)
I have a MOTU interface too which has the same problems on a Mac Pro.
MOTU haven't fixed it yet. -"James"
The reader above had originally sent a copy of Metric Halo's lead developer comments on this, which was actually in reply to another user's forum post (not his) - the user that actually got the private reply from Metric Halo's developer sent a link to a thread at the cubase forums with a clip from the developer comments at http://cubase.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=64767&highlight= (down the page there).
Another Mac Pro owner wrote with what sounds like the same issue:
"Here's my posting on uniconation regarding problems with MOTU firewire.
(he included a link to the posting but it requires a login apparently)
FYI, I have the problems using built-in FireWire AND Cinema Display hub.
MOTU, so far, has been slow to acknowledge or fix anything in my case.
Anyone experience this problem with the Ultralite or any other MOTU
product? I have the the latest MOTU Universal Drivers.
What happens is that my Ultralite will work fine. Then, all of a
sudden, audio will cease to play.
Here are some observations:
When the audio cuts out, iTunes will no longer play. What this means
is that the music is not exactly paused, but no progress will occur
in the song. If I change Audio to my Mac's Built-In Audio, then it
will continue to play.
My CueMix shows the main Output as "Disabled" with no option to
Enable it.
Restarting is the only thing that will help. It does not matter which
firewire port I use. This problem happens on any port.
MOTU has not been very helpful with this matter. Anyone have any idea
how to fix this?
Thanks
