| New Motorola SLVR iTunes Phone |
Cingular has a page today on the latest iTunes phone with video capture/playback (VGA camera w/4x zoom), the Motorola SLVR, which links to an interactive demo of the phone. $199.99 with 2yr contract. Still 100 songs like the previous ROKR model, but maybe this one has USB 2.0 for faster transfers than the ROKR and improved Bluetooth. (I didn't dig into the details on this as personally I'd rather use an iPod for music than a cellphone. But I'm definitely on the "trailing edge" of cellphone use.)

| More Info on Intel Core Duo 2GHz iMac CPU Swap |
| Yesterday's news had a note that a recent issue of MacFan (japanese) magazine had an article on swapping in an Intel Core Duo 2GHz T2500 CPU in a 1.83GHz iMac. They had no online copy of the article but a reader went out and bought the issue:
"
OK, I went out and bought MacFan this afternoon. On page 48, it has
about 3 column inches at the end of an intel iMac disassembly piece.
Reading the Japanese it says (quick and rough translation):
The CPU in the new iMac is mounted in a socket that should mean it can be changed easily. However, the author is not sure that it will run completely normally with an upgraded CPU. The author purchased a 2GHz T2500 from a PC shop and installed it in the socket of a 17" iMac and it booted OK.
There seemed to be no problems and the About this Mac pane reported a 2GHz duo chip. The CPU is exactly the same as that used in Windows PCs. At present, the 2GHz chip costs 53,000 yen and the 2.16GHz T2600 costs 80,000 yen, so it is not really cost effective to do this upgrade.
(a reader sent a link to a buy.com listing showing $472.99 for the T2500/2GHz and $709.99 for the T2600/2.16GHz currently)
However, since the chip set supports faster CPUs, it will
be a doable upgrade in the future. Although this model does support CPU upgrades, they cannot guarantee
that later models will, so choosing this iMac might not be a bad
decision.

Prices on the CPU should drop over time but I agree at those prices it doesn't make much sense for such a relatively small clock speed increase.

| Report on RAlink USB Wireless drivers w/Belkin and D-Link adapters in 10.4.4 |
| (in reply to recent posts on RAlink wireless adapter drivers working in 10.4.4.)
"Hi Mike,
After reading your Thursday report that
http://www.ralinktech.com/supp-1.htm had a driver for 10.4.4 that worked with a Linksys WMP54G v4,
I emailed to ralink technical support to ask what brand of USB wireless adapter they recommended to use.
I got a reply to use either Belkin F5D7050 or D-Link DWL-G122 B or C version.
The Belkin didn't work but I used the D-Link with the latest USB driver for 11g-RT2500 (posted date 2005/11/29) which worked
perfectly.
I tried it on my G4 400 upgraded to 1GHz with either the
original USB 1.1 or additional USB 2.0 card - it worked perfectly. After
the restart you go to the Network Preference Panel it automaticly detected the
additional ethernet and added the IP address. I am using the Netgear WGR614
router.
I also tried it on my iBook G3/600's USB 1.1 port and worked the same. From
the USB Utility report it can go all the way to 54 Mbps which is much
better than the original Airport (802.11b) Card. I have tried it down 2 floors to my basement,
and it still can maintain 48Mbps. I bought this USB adapter in BEST Buy Canada
for CAD49.9.
Thank you...

The database includes reports on CDRWs, Combo DVD-CDRW, DVD-ROM, DVD Burners, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, ORB, ZIP, MO drives, NAS, CF/Smartmedia readers, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, IDE RAID cards, SATA, Firewire, SCSI, USB, adapters). Current total - 15,517 reports. (searching by drive type/brand, mac model etc. listed below will show the full reports, most recent first - does not include updates to previous reports) iApps burn support mentioned in reports unless otherwise noted.
DVD+R/RW + DVD-R/RW Drives:
- IDE Pioneer DVR-110D in eMac (OS X 10.3)

Hard Drives:
- IDE Magnetic Data Tech MDECQ2-0400 40GB in iMac (OS X 10.4)

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
