Apple posts 27in iMac Display firmware update
"About 27-inch iMac Display Firmware Update 1.0
Updates the display firmware on 27-inch iMac systems to address issues that may cause intermittent display flickering.

The 27-inch iMac Display Update will update the display firmware on your iMac. Do not disturb or shut off the power on your iMac during this update.

For detailed information about this update, please visit this website: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3207.
(iMac (27in, Late 2009): Display flickers and the 27in iMac Display Firmware Update 1.0)

A few hours after posting this I checked apple's iMac forums for user feedback on it - found some saying it seems to have helped but saw one user say his display flickers constantly after the update. (But then what firmware or other update hasn't had some % of horror stories. Hopefully it fixes the problem for most users.)

iTunes 9.0.3 update released
Here's info from the iTunes 9.0.3 page (download button goes to the usual http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/)

iTunes 9.0.3 provides a number of important bug fixes, including:
  • iTunes no longer ignores your "Remember password for purchases" setting.
  • Addresses problems with syncing some Smart Playlists and Podcasts with iPod.
  • Resolves a problem recognizing when iPod is connected.
  • Addresses issues that affect stability and performance.

System requirements: OS X 10.4.11 or later.
(also available for windows... incl. a 64bit windows version)

  • Thanks to Matt for the heads-up. (I updated using the D/L version instead of SU.)
(BTW - A 2009 Mac Pro owner asked if this update might affect the core temps/big wattage increase seen with Core audio playback in OS X. (As I mentioned in an article last here on that subject, I see appx 120W increase over idle on my dual 2.66GHz system by just playing audio alone as have many others.) I really think a change to the CPU power mgmt extension or an SMC update would be needed to change that. (It's not seen in Windows - very little wattage increase from audio playback alone.) I checked again after this update - no improvements, still a huge W increase from core audio playback alone. But again I didn't expect this update to affect that.)

PowerMac G5 Coolant Leak/Repairs page updated
I updated the PowerMac G5 Coolant Leaks/Repairs page again over the weekend with a follow-up to an early January report from Gil, noting he's (finally) going to get a new Mac Pro (Quad 2.66GHz) system instead of repairs.
I need to split that huge page (now over 300KB) posted originally in aug 2007 into several pages, so to save you a (long) load time here's a clip on his final resolution:

"Still seeking affirmation that I should feel safe plugging in my repaired/rebuilt PM G5 (though no repair status had given as promised), I emailed on 1/12/2010. Ignored. I emailed again on 1/13/2010. I once again stressed my health and safety concerns and sought affirmation. I got a call 18 hours later. The rep was of the opinion that these repairs never worked out, so she went to her supervisor and got me a replacement offer! Mac Pro Quad 2.66. She also offered discounted upgrades. I went from 3 to 8 GB memory for $100, and from a 640GB HD to a 7200rpm 1TB for $50. They'll ship it in a few days with labels for returning my old PM...."

I keep hoping that eventually Apple would issue some official policy on these so that every affected owner would get a standard response. (Not everyone has been so lucky, although many have at least gotten free repairs but YMMV.)

Workaround for 3870 card Video out not working in Snow Leopard (10.6.2)
Follow-up from a reader that had problems with 3870's 2nd DVI Port (fixed by reseating card) and Svideo out port working in Snow Leopard:

"Over the weekend I attempted to get svideo port on the 3870 working (in 10.6.2) - no luck at all. (this may be fixed in a SL update per comments last week) However, I picked up Apple's DVI to composite adapter - which has an svideo port - and this does work!
For $19 I avoided having to get another video card. Phew.
    Thanks for helping last week,
    Best, Russell"

That takes up a DVI port but IIRC he only needs Svideo out occasionally.
