| Airport Extreme (802.11n) Bases arriving Early |
| Yesterday a reader said he received an apple email that his Airport Extreme (802.11n) base was going to ship 2 weeks earlier than expected (in Mid-Feb) but apparently some are already arriving:
"
Just a quick note to let you know that I just received my new Airport
Extreme via courier here in Australia ... 3 weeks earlier than what
is shown in my Apple Store estimated delivery!!
(I asked if he had any 802.11n enabled Macs to test performance and if he had a USB Hard Drive to try out the "Instant USB Sharing" feature.-Mike)
I haven't got any Intel Macs with an 802.11n card (Power Mac
Dual G4 1.42GHz and Mac Mini Core Duo 1.66GHz - looking to do a CPU swap
soon on the Mini) ...
I got the Airport Extreme 802.11n primarily for the Apple TV which I am waiting on. (But if any devices on the 802.11n base's network are not "N", it will run in a lower compatible mode.)
As for using the USB Storage, have not got any external USB Hard
Drives yet, but am planning on it in the short term.
One note I will make is that the new Airport Utility is very easy to
use, and far more clear in the settings than the previous one. When
you install the software, the old Airport Utility is not removed,
so you need to make sure you use the new one for configuring the AE
802.11n.
Also, the AE Storage is controlled via a separate Application called Airport Disk Utility - Single Window Application.
Will perform some tests when I get the Apple TV. Of note, I have
both my Macs in the study, and they are connected via Ethernet...but will try the Wireless tests once I get the Apple TV (or an
802.11n Mac)
Cheers, Adrian
"
I was curious if the Apple router would have better performance with 802.11n enabled Macs than some readers mentioned earlier this week with their D-Link and Linksys 802.11n routers. (Bottom of that page also has links to several Apple kbase docs on the 802.11n base and USB drive sharing, supported formats/protocols, etc.)

I don't own Quake4 (Mac or PC) to try these but the download includes a readme on usage, listing of maps, scripts etc. in the Docs directory of the download.

| Reader notes on Netgear SSL312 VPN and Intel Macs |
| (from a reader mail today)
"
Netgear SSL312 VPN and Intel Macs
I just thought I'd drop you a note about Netgear's Prosafe VPN Concentrator,
model number SSL312.
This is a great VPN box for a small business network. It works
cross-platform with PCs under ActiveX and Macs under Java. However, the Java
applet used to connect the VPN tunnel on a Mac does not work properly on a
Mac with an Intel chipset. PowerPC is fine, but when you try to launch the
applet via Safari an Intel Mac, you get the red "X".
I talked to Netgear Technical support and they are already aware of the
problem, and hope to get it fixed soon with a firmware update for the unit.
They were not able to get me an updated copy of the applet itself (which the
SSL312 deploys as a .pkg file), so IÃm going to have to keep checking their
support site for the firmware update.
Other than this crucial caveat, the unit is feature-laden and easy to set
up, particularly for the price. Hopefully this problem will be solved in the
near future. Thanks for an awesome site!
-Andrew
"
A repply to the above:
"I read the recent blurb on the Netgear SSL312 VPN and Intel Macs, and
just wanted to mention that you may not need their (Netgear's) Java
app. at all. For years I've been using the built-in VPN capabilities
of OS X to connect to Netgear (as well as Netscreen and Cisco) VPN
solutions.
As far as interfacing to those capabilities, I've had good results
with a freeware product from Lobotomo Sofware called IPSecuritas.
It's a well-written universal front-end to the built-in IPSec in OS
X. Plus, it's free, and the developers are quite responsive. (I
have no connection to Lobotomo Software, I'm just a happy user.)
After all, why use an external application when it's right there in
the OS X kernel?
