Apple Safari 1.0v60 Browser Update
Running Software Updates in X today shows an update to Apple's Safari web browser. Here's the text from the SU window:

"The Safari Update 2-12-03 improves the compatibility with popular web sites based on Safari user feedback, further improves the performance of loading web pages and Flash content, adds support for XML, increases standards conformance and delivers improved application stability. The update also enables access to web sites that offer self-signed security certificates."

The update is also available at http://www.apple.com/safari/download/. (Thanks to Paul McNabola for the heads-up.)

Reader Article on using External IDE Cable connected Superdrive w/Cube
Rich C. sent a link to his article on Cube mods for an externally run IDE cable connected Superdrive. (Some past Cube drive database reports also noted using an externally run cable to use a Superdrive or other desktop model drive instead of the Cube's internal slotted notebook drive, but this article has photos of the process.)
I keep an OS X 10.1.5 partition on my Cube to run the (quickly halted by Apple legal) 'Enabler" for Firewire DVD-R drives that shipped for a very short time last summer with OWC Firewire cased Superdrives. Shortly after I posted my review of that drive (within 24-48 hours) OWC had to stop including it with the drives however. (BTW - The enabler still works in 10.1.5 with iDVD3...)

Unsanity's Mighty-Mouse Cursor Utility
I'm not a big fan of system mods/addons (I prefer to run as lean a system as possible as far as 3rd party system addons) but for those that are, Unsanity.com has a new Mighty Mouse OS X utility. Here's a clip from their page:

" Mighty Mouse allows you to customize your cursors with style - and it does so on the fly, without modifying any system files! Moreover, it allows you to customize all kinds of cursors available in the system - Arrow, I-Beam, Alias, Copy, Move and the Wait cursor. You can animate any cursor and import pre-made ones available at our website. Edit the cursors with the simplicity of copy-paste and drag-and-drop, then hit Apply, and you got it!

With Mighty Mouse, you can:
Animate any of the system cursors (including the Arrow cursor);
Use cursors of any size - smaller or larger than the default ones;
Magnify your existing cursors for easier accessibility;
Download and import cursors made by other users;
Create your own cursors and share them with others;
Instantly import cursors created for Windows XP TM . "

Reader Request: TAM FM/TV OS X software
(Update: I've asked this reader if he's actually running OS X on a TAM since even XPostfacto doesn't currently list the TAM as a supported system, although Jamie Dresser of OWC says he is working with XPostfacto author Ryan Rempel on support for the TAM. The TAM owner later said he was running OS X and used the latest version of XPostfacto.)
A reader with a 20th Anniv. Mac (TAM) asked I post a request to see if anyone knew of any software (or work in progress) to allow using his internal FM/TV Tuner in OS X. I know even support for the A/V modules in Beige G3s and 85/8600s is lacking (even the author of BTV Pro notes it's not supported) but agreed to post this request in case anyone knows of a project by a talented programmer in progress. (He's already using a USB XLR8 capture device and has used iTunes for Net radio, but wanted software to use the internal FM/TV tuner. He's tried posting at TAM specific sites he said but nothing so far.) If anyone knows of a project in progress let me know.

CDRW/CD/DVD/Hard Drive/Cardreader Compatibility Database Update Listing
The Drive Compatibility searchable database had 8 new reports added (reader entries from yesterday; entries today are added the next newsday morning). (*Entries missing info, having no useful info, etc. are deleted. I'm just tired of emailing over and over for missing info, sorry. Also Search for answers, don't post questions there.*) The database includes reports on Combo DVD-CDRW, CDROMs, DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, CDRW, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, ORB, ZIP, MO drives, CF/Smartmedia readers, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, IDE RAID cards, Firewire, SCSI, adapters). Current total 9,803 reports.

  • Plextor PX-W4824A (48x24x48x) in B&W G3 (OS X)
    (FAQ here has burn support plugin for 10.2.x)
    (FYI - Illustrated CD drive install guide here covers G4 towers up to the Digital Audio Model, Beige G3 MT, B&W G3 and 8600/9600 Macs.)

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches). For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc.
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
