Better Price on Zoom 56K Modem: Peter Richards replied to today's earlier post with a lower cost source:

" Saw the comment on the Zoom 56kx. I just bought the external Zoom 56Kx on Sunday at the local Staples store for only $89.95 plus tax. This is less than your posted price. Works great, and dialing into the office (has only Sportster 33.6k) I get peak rates of 74kbps on compressible data using FreePPP with port set at 220kbps. This compares well to SupraExpress 33.6 whose peak rate never exceeded 45kbps w/FreePPP & port at 110kbps

Several people have asked for a complete list of compatible models for the ProMax PCI IDE controller mentioned in yesterday's news. I've requested this info and will post the list when received. [Note: see the later Review of the Turbomax card for more info. The IDE articles page has other (later/faster) controller related articles, etc.]

OS X Game Server Browser: Frank Bernier sent a news tip that may be of interest to those running OS X server with the Quake II code released on Dec 23rd:

" Hi Mike,
This might interest some readers who grabbed Quake II for MacOS X server:

Charon 0.2 is now available for Rhapsody DR2. This is a very preliminary release of an Internet game server browser, released so all the people grabbing the Rhapsody version of Quake II will be able to find all those Quake II servers on the net. See http://www.omnigroup.com/Software/Charon/ for more information or to download the application. Questions and other feedback should be sent to charon@omnigroup.com- andrew_abernathy@omnigroup.com "

I'm still looking reports on OS X server compatibility with G3 CPU upgraded Macs. If you've run Mac OS X server on a G3 CPU card upgraded Mac please contact me with specifics.

VT MP750 Feedback:

" Hello, concur with your article below: I upgraded from ATI Xclaim VR (rage 2) to the the MP750 (230 Mhz,8MB VRAM). It felt faster but not significant. But I did a 16-bit Colour Quickdraw test (Speedometer 4.02) on both cards and the ATI scored 6 point something while the MP750 scored 14 point something. Perhaps Speedometer is not the most accurate test software (sorry, I don;t have the MacBench CDROM to test the graphics) but at least it does indicate better performance in the MP750. "

Apple Product Specs Online: Looking for specs or details on your Apple computer, monitor or printer? Check out Apple's Spec Database page! An excellent source of information on features and capabilities of Apple's products. This link has been added to my Links page for future reference. Another great source for specs on Mac models and clones is EveryMac.com.

Today's Unreal News page has another large update. Included is a list of the most popular maps for Unreal, more on the MythII/3Dfx problem reports and other game news.

Apple and their products did well in Techweb's Reader Poll results. Apple was listed as top company, Jobs as top industry mover and shaker and the iMac was most innovative hardware.

I just received noticed that the external Mac Zoom Telephonics 56K Dual Mode (V.90) mode is as low as $92.95 at this Webshopper pag [link expired now]. This modem won a CNET Editor's Choice, a Macworld 4 1/2 mouse rating, and a boot magazine "bootworthy" award in the last 6 months. [Update: A reader says that he bought the modem for $89.95 at his local Staples]

Please verify your Email address when sending support mail: I'm still getting a few bounces on mail I send to help readers with tech support problems. Please ensure you verify your correct email address (repeat it in the mail as a safety measure). Also, please check the FAQ, and Troubleshooting page for possible solutions first before writing - and please try the Men in Mac Help page as an alternative on requests for tech support to help me be able to spend more time on reviews. Thanks.

Note: Before sending tech support related questions please check the Freq. Asked Questions, Site Contents, CPU Card reviews/articles, SCSI reviews articles, Graphics card reviews, Tips/Misc, Message Boards and Help pages - in many cases the answers to your questions are there and they have far more detail than I can list in an email. For Apple G3 system info - see the G3-ZONE. News and guest reviews that don't require a reply are always welcome. I hope to catch up in the next few weeks. Thanks.

Make a Difference: Be the Difference
Randy Mita, Brad Lau and I came up with a new slogan and theme for Mac advocacy - "Make a Difference: Be the Difference". We're asking that all Mac owners take advantage of every opportunity to let others know the Mac advantage. It's a grass-roots approach that will surely help. You might save someone from a lifetime of Windows in the bargain.
