Stuffit 5.0/Cool DVD Conflicts?: Patrick Gallagher of MacWarehouse reported:
" Thought your readers may like to know the SCSI E4 DVD drive appears to be incompatable with Stuffit 5.0. Thanks to Conflict Catcher I was able to narrow it down to the "Stuffit Spacesaver" extension. The problem I was having was everytime I tried to play a movie, I got a message saying there was no reconizable DVD disc in the drive. I included the conflict report from CC.

More FutureCop Feedback: In a followup to the problem post in yesterday's news, Kris writes he found a fix to run the game on the iMac:

" Hello,
I have a rev 'a' iMac and a rev 'b' it works on both only after after I cleared the extensions folder of the inputsprockets except of these three:

InputSprocket Keyboard
InputSprocket Mouse
InputSprocketLib

I think I read about doing this on our page. Anyways, it worked on both after doing this.
FutureCOP runs in Rave only on the rev 'b' iMac, the rev 'a' iMac runs only in software [due to the RagePro in the rev B-Mike]. Because of this it plays, looks, and runs better on the rev 'b.' It's a little unusual though because the rev 'b' only has 32 meg's of RAM. This made Unreal performance slower than the rev 'a' (which only has 2 meg's of VRAM.) But FutureCOP runs better on the rev 'b' with 32 meg's of RAM and Rave.
Kris Baxter "

Other reader feedback indicates it runs fine on 8.5.1 as well:

" Mike, runs just fine under both RAVE and 3Dfx (well, I won't use the RAVE version, it's way dark and muddy).
8600 w/300/150 G3 PF card, clocked to 325MHz, 256MBs RAM, OS 8.5.1 and 8.5
Paul Constantine "

Remember to send in your registration card and note that FutureCOP was bought for your MAC - not a PC. this is critical to let EA know that Mac owners want more games!

The PB Tips and Tricks page has an update from Bruce Lum on repairing the rubberized surface of the PB. Thanks Bruce!

G3's Sold Out at Apple? A reader says Apple is sold out of most G3 models:

" Mike,
Went to check out the Apple Store and found this message:

"Surprised by our success!
Due to extremely strong Q1 sales, Apple has sold all Power Mac G3 systems available*, including servers and displays, through the quarter end.

While this is evidence of the strong support for the Mac platform from Apple's professional customers, it has placed the units in short supply. Not to worry, in early January there will be plenty of Power Mac G3 systems, from entry to high-end configurations, including servers and displays, to meet your demands.

*The 266MHz Power Macintosh G3 Desktop "Entry Model" is still available."

Wonder why they would lay off 500 people only to then have a shortage of product. Apple in the infinate wisdom... Geez
regards,
robert "

They may be in the process of ramping up production of different Mac models (ie Yosemite/G3 Pro). Since they have a build to order capability, I suspect this is the reason for the note. As for the layoffs, maybe they are using other overseas mfg and other services and reducing workforces elsewhere. I hate to see anyone lose their job, especially at this time of year.

Man of the Year: As noted in yesterday's news - Steve Jobs is one of the nominees for Man of the Year in Time's Poll [link expired]. He was #3 as of today.

Fix for Dark Vengence with MacPicasso/3D Overdrive and Game Wizard VII: Rene writes that using the game supplied 3dfx Rave extension solved the problem:

" Hi Mike,
yesterday I wrote you a message that the Dark Vengeance Demo doesn't work with the MacPicasso540 + 3D Overdrive. That's not right, I got it to work. The trick is to remove the "3D Overdrive RAVE" extension (came with the card) and copy the "3DFX RAVE" extension came with DV-Demo into the extension folder.
Important is NOT to remove the "3DFXGlideLib2.x" came with the MP540+3DO, this is a special version of the lib that works only with the MP540+3DO.
Bye, Rene Trost "

As noted in the review of the MP540/3DO, they use a special Glidelib to allow their 3DO (3dfx 8MB piggyback card) to output into a window. Note: a Game Wizard (Voodoo2) owner told me the same thing - that the game had problems in with the Micro Conversions GW Rave extension but the supplied 3Dfx Rave extension worked. Interesting, unlike the glidelib it seems the 3dfx Rave extension works on both Voodoo1 and Voodoo2.

Frank just sent another reader Tip for Voodoo 1 card owners with Dark Vengence:

" I checked personally if Dark Vengeance works with the 3DFx voodoo1. It does but you need to do the following :

Open the Custom.ini file with simpletext and add the following like without the quotes : "HARDWARE=SOFT8"

then once you get the menu, open the option section , select the rendering engine option, press enter and then press the "up arrow key". Quickdraw hardware acceleration should be available. You are all set after. "

I wonder if they tried the Rave extension noted above.

I'm getting more email bounces (Deanna Weinberg - your's just bounced twice so I can't answer your request for help). *Please* verify your email address (list it and check it in the email body).

Make a Difference: Be the Difference
Randy Mita, Brad Lau and I came up with a new slogan and theme for Mac advocacy - "Make a Difference: Be the Difference". We're asking that all Mac owners take advantage of every opportunity to let others know the Mac advantage. It's a grass-roots approach that will surely help. You might save someone from a lifetime of Windows in the bargain.
