| G5 Tower logic board repair (not leak related) turns into New Mac Pro (free) |
From a reader mail this weekend - quite a "Christmas Present" from Apple:
"Greetings and Happy Holidays, I have followed your chronicle of readers' experiences with PowerMac G5 Coolant Leaks/Repairs and want to share my own experience. Just over a week ago, I got a call from the genius bar at the Apple Store in Rancho Cucamonga, CA and was told that, contrary to their initial thinking, the fact that my G5 Dual 2.5GHz purchased late November 2004 was running on a single processor for a few months was NOT due to a coolant leak (which is covered under their extended warranty program) (Note: although they have covered many repairs for readers here over the last year, to date I've seen no official repair extension program for Coolant leaks - the only official repair extension program on the current Apple PowerMac G5 support page is the Repair Extension Program for Power Supply Issues for some models.-Mike), nor failed processor (which isn't), and therefore must be the logic board. Cost of repair: $1,023.00. Ouch I thought.
The riddle is that it booted cold with little or no problems and ran all software, albeit at a reduced performance, on one processor. Granted it would not reboot ever--not without letting it sit for a period of time (15-20 min. minimum).
I expressed my disappointment that what was, when purchased, the top-of-the-line $3300 Mac replete with 6800 ultra video card had lasted just shy of 4 years. I also expressed my dissatisfaction that I had delivered the machine to them on Nov. 30 with the promise of repair in 7-10 days and heard nothing until that seemingly fateful phone call close to one month later. I let him know that the fact that I had upgraded hard drives, ram, added an extra PCI firewire (TI chipset) card, and an internal PCI audio interface for ProTools (music production) made it almost impossible for me to not get it fixed, though, admittedly, my black MacBook is much quicker running Logic 8 Pro.
After being told by the genius that he wasn't the one who actually inspected the machine and performed the assessment, I waited by the phone to speak to the tech that had. The phone call was great news. He stated that after conferring with two supervisors they agreed to cover the cost of the logic board repair. The reason, justifiably, was that they had failed to keep me informed of the status of the repair since what was initially a 7-10 day window ended up being almost a month without any notification.
Obviously I was quite pleased with this great customer service gesture. Faith in Apple restored. I then patiently awaited what was estimated to be two more days before my beloved G5 would be ready. I received a call this evening stating that due to slowness in getting
parts and the age of the repair, Apple would replace it with a brand new standard 8-core Mac Pro! He is installing the two recently purchased hard drives that were in the G5 into the new machine giving it 3 drives (as long as I return the original 160 GB drive) along with the additional FW card. He was wiling to install the PCI audio interface controller card as well but I declined since my wife had purchased a new audio interface of much better quality for me as a Christmas gift. He was even willing to run migration assistant to get the new machine as similar in software, files, and accounts as the G5. Again I declined since before I brought it in for repair I had backed up everything to my black macbook and external FW drive, which made it the most current iteration and would be a better source for migrating.
This just confirms for me that Apple stands behind their products and their customer service. My first Mac was a 512K enhanced. I feel like my loyalty has been rewarded. I feel very lucky too. Good luck to everyone else in pursuing a similar resolution.
Peace, Anthony J."
I'm sure I'll get a few mails from readers that were not so lucky in the past (although many leak repairs out of warranty were covered in the last year - including several that got new Mac Pro replacement systems). And as I mentioned previously on the G5 Coolant Leaks/Repairs page, IMHO the reason for those out-of-warranty repairs is that it's a potential safety issue (w/possible liability in this age of lawsuits over anything). |
