Notes on Sonnet eSATA Expresscard Drivers
(Also added to the MBP/Express34 cards page - the sonnet card like many others is based on the Silicon Image 3132 chip.)

"The driver on the Sonnet site for their Tempo SATA ExpressCard/34 Driver (Mac) version 1.1.9v2 (25 November 2008) will not work in my MacBook Pro early 2008 under 10.5.5. The card shows up in the menu bar as an unknown vendor and any attached drives will not mount.
If I install the driver SiI3132 1.1.9u from the Silicon Image site everything mounts and works normally and the card identifies itself as from Silicon Image. Obviously a sonnet driver problem from my point of view.
My card is the Sonnet Tempo SATA ExpressCard/34, the old one, not the "REV A".
-Brian A."

I downloaded the Sonnet "1.1.9v2" driver there to check the pkg contents and the base driver included is still the "SiliconImage3132.kext" dated Dec. 6, 2006. (Silicon Image site 1.1.9u driver also dated Dec. 2006. SI site also has a 2007 dated RAID5 driver.) Not sure why it didn't load (or why you'd use it vs the original SI site driver). My first thought was that maybe the earlier vs. rev A cards have different card IDs (shown in ASP for instance - I once had to edit an Apple Airport2 driver pkg to change an ID to match a MS card, otherwise it would not load.) But Sonnet has a note at the Mac 1.1.9 V2 driver download that says:

"This software provides support for all versions of the Tempo SATA ExpressCard/34 adapter in MacBook Pro computers running Mac OS X".

For the windows driver however they have separate downloads for the original card and the "Rev A" card. If I were Brian I'd write Sonnet support to see what they say about the V2 driver not loading. A later mail from another Sonnet card/V2 driver user with problems said sonnet tech support suggested clearing the system kext/driver cache - but that didn't help he said. (Update: On Dec. 9th another sonnet user wrote he was told by tech support there was a bug in v.1.1.9 v2 and he's testing a revised version.)
(BTW: The expresscards page has a Nov. 3rd report from a "Rev A" Sonnet eSATA card user that had problems and eventually switched back to an earlier card.)

I asked Brian for info on the external case he used as I like to have details on what external cases worked well with eSATA cards, as not all do. (He later wrote he had a WD 1TB MyBook Home, although it was usually connected to an Airport Base's USB port, so not sure how much eSATA expresscard use it's had.)
Yesterday another Late 2008 MBP owner with an SI chip based Griffin eSATA card reported kernel panics trying to use it, although he didn't include info on what driver version he was using, or ext. drive/case details either. (I asked for that info twice now but still not gotten a reply.)

If any late 2008 (Unibody) MacBook Pro owner is using an eSATA expresscard OK (any brand), let me know the details including info on external drive(s)/case used. (Even SI notes external case/bridge boards can be a source of problems - there's been past reports here as well as on the article about using Mac Pro spare SATA ports w/external drives.)

Another out-of-warranty PowerMac G5 Coolant Leak Repair covered
"...About 2 weeks ago my G5 started having freezes and growing problems rebooting from not only the hard drive but also from the install CD. I did all the usual stuff with no luck. I then stated looking for coolant leaks. I found nothing obvious and hadn't heard any crackling or popping. With a flashlight I finally found what looked like yellow-green dried residue on the top of the rear foot of the PowerMac case. It was three or four maybe 1/8" in diameter dried little rings. Hard to see. Nothing showed up on the bottom of the rear grill.... Only after shining a pinpoint light into the gap between the side cover and back of the processor/cooling system unit could I see dried liquid, some white tiny crystals or powder and corrosion.

I called Apple and they helped me right away. It took perhaps 20 minutes on hold after giving the first customer service rep all the info before I got bumped up a level. That person asked me to immediately unplug the G5. He also asked how much the unit was leaking. He then asked me to take it to an Apple store or certified repair facility... the repair guy found all the info on my case in the Apple database and said Apple will pay for everything.
After pulling off the CPU/coolant unit cover he found the damage severe. A few days of receiving multiple DOA parts from Apple passed. I gave another call to customer support and asked if I could just get a replacement MacPro. That was a no-go supposedly because my PowerMac was now 4 years old.

I got the G5 back today and it is working fine. Nice and clean inside too.
Here's what they replaced:

  • Power Supply
  • Logic Board
  • Both processors and cooling units
  • Power supply pad

My G5 is a Dual 2.5GHZ PowerMac, Purchased November, 2004 with GeForce 6800GT and 4GB RAM. I did have Apple's extended warranty but that expired a year ago.
