| DVD Studio Pro 2.0.3 Update |
I don't own DVD Studio Pro 2, but Stuart wrote that after applying the QT 6.5 update today, DVD SP 2.0.3 appeared in Software Update. Apple's DVD Studio Pro downloads page (form) lists these changes:
"
New in DVD Studio Pro 2.0.3 Update
This update is strongly recommended for all users of DVD Studio Pro 2.
- Includes changes from DVD Studio Pro 2.0.1-2.0.3
- Adds support for Cropped D-1 and 1/2 D-1 MPEG-2 video resolutions
- Changes the behavior of the dual-layer break point for DVD-9
projects
- Additional improvements (kbase doc w/more details)
"
Another reader said there were Final Cut Pro 4 and Livetype updates available today also.
"Hey Mike I know you don't yet have FCP so I wanted to mention for the news
that there are some smaller pro app updates for FCP to go along with
QuickTime 6.5 and DVDSP 2.0.3. There is FCP 4.1.1, it's only claim to fame
is improving simplified Chinese input, there is LiveType 1.1.1 that has:
This update includes all previous updates to LiveType, providing the
following additional fixes and/or improvements:
- Timeline enhancements: improved media descriptions, effect order
setting, snapping, copying and pasting effects
- Matte to Texture feature available directly from the Media Browser
- Individual effect assignment for selected characters
- Ability to replace movies and images
- Proper behavior interpolation when applying two or more effects
- Improved memory usage
And last Friday you mentioned that Apple had a Pro App Runtime update for
Panther, I wanted to let you know they had one for Jaguar as well at about
the same time available through Software Update.

| Xcode 1.1 Update released |
| Domingo sent a note there's an Xcode 1.1 update (16MB) available now via Software Update. Here's a clip from the SU info:
"
The Xcode 1.1 Update provides overall stability and performance
enhancements to Xcode IDE, as well as improvements to debugging, workflow, the Xcode build system and CodeSense. It is recommended that all Xcode users install this update.
"
Although I didn't see any permissions repairs/corrections after applying today's earlier QT 6.5 and iTunes 4.2 updates, I did after applying the Xcode update. (In fact one some 10.3.2 updated systems (but not all) I had corrections done after the QT 6.5 update also.)

| Updated ATTO UL3S/UL3D SCSI Card Drivers (reader notes much improved performance) |
I don't currently have an ATTO card installed (or any modern SCSI drives) to test this update but the first reader report sounds good.
"
Mike, Just a heads up the ATTO has released new Panther drivers for their Ultra 160 cards, UL3S and UL3D.
http://www.attotech.com/software/driver15.html
We have installed these 3.0 drivers and can report an over 60% increase in average read/write performance. We are now seen over 180MBs on our video editing RAIDs. This equeals 6 real time streams of uncompressed 8it video.
Yeah Yeah Yeah...
-- Fred Connors Jr.
- General Manager TheTroupe Modern Media Design & Production
I asked what ATTO model he had and if it was an OEM or retail card
We have retail UL3D cards installed in Dual G5 2.0 systems with 3.5GB of ram
"
If any other readers try these I welcome your feedback. Please include card model (OEM or retail) and system details in reports. Thanks.

| Quicktime 6.5 and iTunes 4.2 Updates |
| After a heads-up mail from Bob R., running software update in OS X (10.3.2 here) showed a Quicktime 6.5 update (18.2MB):
"
QuickTime 6.5 delivers a number of new features and important updates, including:
Creation and playback of mobile multimedia in the new 3GPP2 format.
Creation and playback of mobile multimedia in the popular AMC format.
Improved text track support.
Enhanced DV playback options.
Enhanced support for iMovie, iDVD, and Final Cut Pro.
"
Bob also mentioned an iTunes 4.2 update but it does not appear (yet) in software update. However it is listed at Apple's iTunes Download page. There's no 4.2 change info there as I'm typing this but the downloaded update readme file lists:
"
What's new in iTunes 4.2
iTunes 4.2 allows you to sign in and buy music from the iTunes Music Store using either your AOL or Apple Account, view the iTunes Music Store in a separate window, and includes a number of performance improvements.

| More Feedback on G5 Firmware Update (reduced noise/audio noise) |
| Here's the latest reader feedback on the PowerMac G5 5.1.4 firmware update released on Monday:
" This update has helped in the recording studio by reducing the fan noise when turning off the "Nap" feature found inside the CHUD installed Hardware folder in OS X's System Preferences. (Disabling NAP mode using CHUD tools was a tip for silencing the G5 Power Supply "chirping" noises, mentioned a couple of months ago on our G5 Noise Reports/CHUD Tools Fix page-Mike)
Turning off the "Nap" feature used to cause my G5 fans to really Rev
Up loudly. (It speeds them up a bit on my Dual G5 2GHz, but not
dramatically except when taxing the CPU, but then even w/NAP mode on the fans rev up when running demanding apps/games. I had firmware 5.0.2f2 before the update though -one of the oldest G5 firmware versions that shipped early.-Mike)
Now, after the 5.14 firmware update, they're revving up to a
comfortable and reasonable noise level.
Disabling the "Nap" feature removes almost ALL noise coming from the audio outputs of the G5. Some G5 owners say they can still hear noise and "chirping", even with their old PSU replaced with a newer version. (I had my Dual G5 PS replaced, it helped with a noisy PS fan, but not for the chirping noises unless NAP mode was disabled.-Mike) I can't hear anything, and I've still got my original PSU.
Even when going through my external audio mixing board, where there is increased gain, the G5 noise level is very low. For me, the "chirping" is completely gone with "Nap" disabled. (Disabling NAP mode solves the chirping sound for most all G5s even w/older firmware. As mentioned on the page here previously, Apple does not recommend disabling NAP mode.-Mike)
I now have Midi modules that are noisier than the audio output of the
G5 DP 2ghz.
G5 DP 2Ghz, OS X.3.1, 160GB SATA HD (OEM), 250GB SATA Western
Digital HD, 200GB FW 400 Oxford drive, External FW Pioneer DVD-CDR RW
drive, Internal Sony DVD-CDR RW drive, RME Digi PCI audio card, UAD-1 PCI DSP
card, USB-Emagic AMT-8 Midi device, USB Epson 900 Printer.

The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
