| Feedback on Revolution 7.1 Disable DSP Tip (solving Kernel Panics/Noise) |
| I've updated the earlier page on Revolution 7.1 driver v1.29 feedback/tips with this latest report, but just in case it's missed by anyone I thought I'd post this one separately:
"Hello Mike, (once again)
I was close to a complete Format and Install (including zero data on my 80 G HD.) I thought this would give the 1.2.9 drivers a chance. I really did not want to go to this extreme but this has become a personal issue for me now. Nothing and I mean nothing is giving me problems other than these revolution drivers. (see his previous problem reports in the previous news item below-Mike) I just did a super clean install on September 24th with the release of Panther.
So.......at around 12:55 I decided to see if you had updated your website ... and low and behold I saw the latest tip from one of your readers:
"(from the earlier 1.2.9 driver reports page today, emphasis added.-Mike)
No problems so far. If anyone is having lingering issues with KP's though, I'd recommend turning off all the DSP features, like bass control and surround sound. Those are what seem to cause the kernel panics. They are also responsible for the massive amounts of cracking and noise that some users complain about. That's just a consequence of DSP, and more often than not, it makes music sound awful, anyway. Just turn on bass management and listen to a piano track if you don't believe me.
--Damien S. "
I did exactly as he (Damien S.) said and I opened up iTunes and I knew right off the bat that this is the underlying problem. You see no clicks, pops ,or distortion of any kind. I have been running iTunes for an hour now with bass mgmt. turned off and also all aspects of SRS turned off and no KP's at all...
Now I know that those who purchased this card do not want to hear this but it is the only thing working for me right now. Maybe those who are not having problems are using digital out. Maybe they have their settings the same as Damien.S suggested.
Anyhow I guess I will hold off on the clean install for the time being. It seems all issues are associated within this card/driver.
Thanks for helping me with this problem and have a great holiday season.
-Jerry"
If anyone else with KP's also finds this helped (or if you're not having problems and it's always been disabled), let me know. Include Mac model/OS info in reports (assuming using 1.2.9 driver).

| Reader Report on TDK USB 256MB Flash based MP3 Player/FM Radio |
| (from a drive db report)
(Note: The TDK Mojo does not support AAC format, so you can't play iTunes
store music on it, unless you convert the file first to MP3. It supports MP3 and WMA files.)
"
Bought a 256MB TDK flash based MP3 player at CompUSA for $100 AR. (After rebate) Chose this because it had an "iTunes Plugin" that came on CD. The plug in took 10 seconds to install, and now when I plug the USB (1.1) cable in the the keyboard port, the TDK MP3 player shows up in iTunes as a folder. Simply drag songs onto the drive and they transfer to the player.
The drive also has an expansion slot (SD), so it could hold up to 768MB. The player is very small and looks like it has good build quality, and the navigation is generally pretty good once you spend a few minutes learning it.
It also has an FM receiver with 20 presets and a voice recording function. (It can also record from the FM Radio-Mike) Headphones are earbud type and pretty good as well. I would recommend it but the sale ends 12-13-03. Model # MOJO256F. -Scott
"
I wish they could update the firmware for AAC support, but it's still a nice player for $99 AR. The Mojo 256 f lists for $209 according to the TDK website today. Searching Compusa's website for TDK mp3 players shows the mojo 256 price is $99.99 after a $60 instant rebate + $40 mail-in rebate.

| TechTool Pro 4 Reports page updated |
I've updated the TechTool Pro 4 feedback page to include 2 more reader reports, including one that said removing an edrive didn't cause any problems, unlike a report yesterday from another TTPro 4.01 user.
If you've used TechTool Pro 4, I welcome your comments. (Include mac model used/OS version and if you've tested booting from the TTPro 4 CD on the latest mac models in reports. Remember it can take a long long time to boot from the TTPro 4 CD, even on a fast Mac - up to 10 minutes Micromat says.)

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
