News stories of Dec. 9th, 2003:
Revolution 7.1 driver update 1.2.9 released (first report notes Kernal Panics fixed)
I don't own a Revolution 7.1 card personally, but over the last month there's been many reports here of Kernel Panics (and some noted only 2-channel audio) from owners of the card as well as several reader tips on those issues. Tonight a reader sent a note there's a driver update (1.2.9) that is said to fix both problems:

" Just a line revolution 1.2.9 Drivers are out and they fix the kernel panics and the rear channel loss. Mine works great now in my dual G5.
Shawn "

I searched the M-Audio Drivers page (selecting Revolution and OS X 10.3) and the 1.2.9 driver update is linked/listed with the following notes:

" Release Notes:
-Kernel extension loading problem fixed.
-10.3 (Panther) support

The Dec. 4th posted date there I assume is a typo.

More Xpostfacto/Unsupported Mac/Panther Tips (boot partition tip)
" Since Ryan has introduced the whole idea of a "helper" disk in XPostFacto 3, I decided to try a few things with this (Beige G3) 266 I've got sitting in front of me. I've managed to get 10.3 working on a 16 GB partition by installing to a smaller partition, and using CCC to clone that to a larger partition. next boot, start up in 9, and fire up xpf again. tell it to restart in X on your big partition, and use your smaller partition as a helper. the small partition needs enough room to hold the X kernel and the boottime extension set.

TechTool Pro 4 Reports page updated (Package Restoration Glitch, 2 more test crash reports)
I've updated the TechTool Pro 4 feedback page to include 3 more reader reports. (Problems with package restoration, and another report of intermediate tests crashing when run from CD and a report of tests crashing when run from HD on a system with 10.2.8 and 10.3.1 installs.)
If you've used TechTool Pro 4, I welcome your comments. (Include mac model used/OS version and if you've tested booting from the TTPro 4 CD on the latest mac models in reports. Remember it can take a long long time to boot from the TTPro 4 CD, even on a fast Mac - up to 10 minutes Micromat says.)

Higher Res version of Doom 3 E3 trailer Movie
A reader sent a note that 3dgamer's Doom3 files page has a 640x480 (163MB D/L) Doom3 (Quicktime) movie trailer.
"An updated version of the E3 movie trailer for DOOM 3 is now available, celebrating this Wednesday's tenth anniversary of the original first-person shooter by id Software. There is no new footage in this release, but it comes at a notably higher resolution than the previous version of last May."

Scroll down the linked page to the Dec 8, 2003 dated 163MB "d3_e3_hires.zip" titled "Movie trailer of E3 2003 (640x480, 2:58, MOV)"
(There's also downloads of zipped screenshots there.)

Rate Your CPU Upgrade Reports Database Updated
The Rate Your CPU Upgrade database has been updated with 1 new report this morning (reader entries Yesterday; entries today are added the next newsday morning). Total to date: 8,950. Here's a summary of the update added today (search by brand/mac model for full reports - latest reports always shown first):

  • Powerlogix G4/1GHz in (Gigabit Enet DP500) G4/AGP (rated 9) (includes before/after tests)
(My reviews of G4 and G3 upgrades w/apps/game tests, install info, etc. are linked here. OC/CPU module articles are on the Systems page.)

(Warning - Overclocking may not be reliable and could lead to hardware failure or corrupted data.) You can find the full reports by searching the database selecting the indicated Mac model and upgrade card brand/type. If you've upgraded the CPU on your Mac, please post an entry in the database. Search the database for entries from most every upgradable Mac model *before* you buy. (Searchable by mac model/upgrade brand). For detailed reviews with performance tests and install tips, see the CPU Upgrades page.)

CDRW/CD/DVD/Hard Drive/Cardreader Compatibility Database Update Listing
The Drive Compatibility Database had 4 new reports added (reader entries from yesterday; entries today are added the next newsday morning). The database includes reports on Combo DVD-CDRW, CDROMs, DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, CDRW, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, ORB, ZIP, MO drives, CF/Smartmedia readers, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, IDE RAID cards, Firewire, SCSI, adapters). Current total 11,893 reports. (searching by drive type/brand, mac model etc. listed below will show the full reports, most recent first)

    CDRW Drives:
  • IDE Sony CRX230A in Beige G3 (OS 9.2)
(no native burn support, didn't note speed rating or if bootable from CD)
(Illustrated CD drive install guide here covers G4 towers up to the Digital Audio Model, Beige G3 MT and B&W G3 Macs)

    Combo DVD+CDR Drives:
  • IDE LG GCC-4480 (48x24x48x + 16x DVD-ROM) in B&W G3 (OS X 10.3)

    DVD+R/RW + DVD-R/RW Drives:
  • IDE Liteon LDW-411S in B&W G3 (OS X)
(no native burn support, tried patchburn, not bootable from C key)

    DVD-R Drives:
  • IDE Pioneer DVR-105 in Dual G4 (OS X)

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches). For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc.
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
