| Yet Another 9800 Pro Cooler Option (Copper HS/24dB fan) |
| (Updated - see below this post for a reader comment on the fan noise of this cooler - it's not quiet.)
In reply to the earlier post on alternative Fan/Heatsinks for the 9800 Pro, a reader (thanks James) sent another one to consider - the Iceberq4 CCB-A4C w/Copper heatsink and (he said) a 24dB(A) rated fan that sells for $15.95 (plus shipping). That page doesn't note the fan noise spec but James mentioned 24dB(A) so I assume it's from the package/docs with the fan. By comparison the quietest 9800 Pro cooler fan (the $69 Verax G03, nickel plated heatsink) is rated (per their PDF specs doc) at 11-14dB(A). The Verax G03 fan is listed as 3700 RPM, the Iceberq4 CCB-A4C page lists 6000 RPM.
Update - a reader that installed this Iceberg4 cooler wrote:
"
Hi Mike,
I bought one of these for my Radeon 9800 OEM in my Dual G5 and it was a
disappointment, it runs at a constant 6000rpm and is just as noisy as
the supplied ATI fan. It is a different sort of noise, higher pitched,
but just as annoying. I do not recommend it.
rob.k"
Although I wasn't thrilled about the nickel plated sandblasted
mating finish, I install the Verax G03 on my OEM 9800 Pro and
it's so quiet you literally can't tell it's running.

| Another 9800 Pro Fan/Heatsink Option ($28) |
(Updated w/reader comments on the cooler)
"
Mike-
Someone on the Apple boards noted this fan for the Radeon 9X00. (http://2cooltek.safeshopper.com/51/394.htm?694 - fan/HS and ram chip heatsinks) Looks to take up about the same space as the Verax (lose 1 slot), but we can't be sure how silent it is or how well it cools. Only $28 bucks
though. Worth a look.

A reader replied to this post:
"
To let the readers know, it is not quiet. I have one on my GeForce3 in my PC. but that is a good price (paid 25 for mine just the hsf no ramsinks). Thanks for the site, visit it everyday
Mike C.
"
I was hoping it would be quieter than the dentist drill noise coming from my (and some other reader's) 9800 Pro. (The BTO/OEM model fan sample I have is louder than the retail card model which has the same HS/fan on it, so there's some variation possible in fan noise.) Although expensive ($69 US plus shipping), the Verax G03 is very quiet.

| Reader Tip for Loss of Sound Channels w/Revolution 7.1 Drivers |
| Although most wrote about kernel panics with the later Rev 7.1 drivers in OS X, a reader today sent a tip for the anyone having only 2 channel audio:
"
Hello Mike,
I have read (here) that some are having trouble with the 1.2.7
Revolution drivers outputting more than two channels. I spent a couple of hours troubleshooting with Alan from M-Audio last Monday night. I am also going to help him beta test a new set of drivers as soon as he gets the bugs out of them.
Please tell those (that had the problem) if they disable "auto-login" the drivers will work as they should. Also if they log out and back in again they once again should work. I do not know if they will get kernel panics once they do this but I did.
The reason that their card is not picking up all channels is due to the
log-in thing. Apple changed this in 10.3.1.
The kernel panic thing is a whole different issue. (see earlier news item today on this)
Sincerely, Jerry

| Reader Tip for Kernel Panics with M-Audio 1.2.8 Revolution 7.1 Driver |
| (from a reader mail - some but not all readers had Kernel Panics with the now-pulled 1.2.8 driver.)
"Hi Mike. I had previously posted a problem (kernel panics) experienced when changing system volume via the Apple keyboard's volume control buttons and using the M-Audio Revolution 7.1 PCI board in my dual G4 1.25 Ghz machine (FW800).
I just wanted to let you know that I think I isolated the problem! Turning off "play user interface sound effects" and "play feedback when volume keys are pressed" in the sound control
panel seems to solve this problem.
My system has been stable ever since I did this. Hope this helps others. Please advise M-Audio and Apple on this one (probably Apple's fault!). Definitely a bug! --Jim"
I forwarded Jim's mail to the M-Audio lead programmer. If it doesn't happen when using onboard Audio, I'd guess it's related to the M-Audio card driver. As noted yesterday they are reportedly working on an updated driver to be released soon.

| Tip for PB G3/Wallstreet PCCard Eject problem in 10.3 |
| Wednesday's news page had a report on installing 10.3 on a PowerBook G3 wallstreet using XPostFacto 3.0. A reader replied to the comments on the PCcard/PCMCIA eject issue in that report with a tip:
"
Hi Mike, I saw your report on the Wallstreet with Panther, and thought your
readers might like to know that the PC card ejection kext was not
included in the Panther release, but the source is still in the tree.
I recompiled it on my Wallstreet in Panther and put it on my web site
for those who don't want to mess with that. It is at:
http://www.wwc.edu/~frohro/ApplePMUPCCardEject.dmg
You need to go to the terminal and do the following after putting it in
the folder /System/Library/Extensions/ to complete the installation:
sudo chown -R root /System/Library/Extensions/ApplePMUPCCardEject.kext
sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/ApplePMUPCCardEject.kext
Your site has been my favorite! Keep up the good work.
Rob
"
Thanks. I added Rob's tip to the archived page with the Wallstreet/XPF report.

| TechTool Pro 4 Reports page updated |
I've updated the TechTool Pro 4 feedback page to include the latest reader reports. (Including one complaining about very long drive optimization times.)
If you've used TechTool Pro 4, I welcome your comments. (Include mac model used/OS version and if you've tested booting from the TTPro 4 CD on the latest mac models in reports. Remember it can take a long long time to boot from the TTPro 4 CD, even on a fast Mac - up to 10 minutes Micromat says.)

You can find the full reports by searching the database selecting the indicated Mac model and upgrade card brand/type. If you've upgraded the CPU on your Mac, please post an entry in the database. Search the database for entries from most every upgradable Mac model *before* you buy. (Searchable by mac model/upgrade brand). The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
