| Yamaha OS9/OSX CRW-F1 firmware updaters, Notes/Links on other Models |
| Update - a reader replied to this post saying the FW F1 flasher worked for his internal IDE F1 drive (without needing the older tip noted in the past from a 2100 drive owner)
"Just a FYI - The Yamaha CRW-F1 1.0f firewire updater successfully
updated my EIDE drive attached to the Mac ATA/IDE ports.
Jeff"
Firewire drives are just IDE models in a FW->IDE bridge based case, but past reports on the 2100 IDE drive noted the FW flasher didn't work on the IDE drive model.
(original post follows)
"
Hi Mike,
Happy holidays!
Yamaha has just posted (12/27/02) OS9 and OSX firmware updaters for their CRW-F1 44x/24x/44x cd burner.
http://www.yamaha.co.jp/english/product/computer/fw-10.html
They have OS9 and OSX updaters for SCSI, firewire and usb. I successfully used the OSX firewire updater on an IDE model in a firewire case.

Way back when the 2100 series (16x10x40 model) was the fastest Yamaha drive, a reader noted on this older 2100 firmware page he was able to flash an IDE drive by mixing the SCSI flasher app and the ROM file from the Firewire update:
" this is an update to a previous (2100 drive) review i posted on 5/18/2001. I've got important information about upgrading a Yamaha 2100 E IDE without the "help" of a PC.
I made my own "IDE updater" by mixing a scsi installation program
(Macinst21.exe) and the latest version of the firewire firmware
(atf01302.bin). You need to put them in a same folder. I named it
"me2110n_e". Put anything else in the trash. Then double click the
installation program and... voily!!! I tried it and It's working. No
problems (reading, writing CDs, and it's still bootable).
Emmanuel"
"
Not sure if this would work with later flashers/ROM files for other drives, but just an interesting note from a page page and FAQ item here. I've updated the FAQ's item on Yamaha CDRW Firmware updates to include the F1 page link. (The prev. info had links to 2100, 2200, and 3200 series update pages at Yamaha.)

| Reader Comments on Mac Quickbooks 5, Registration Problems |
| I don't own this software so just posting it as a FYI to anyone that does or is interested in QB 5 for Macs:
"
Hi, Mike-
I was one of the beta testers for this product, and so received a copy
of the release software last week. For those of us who have used v4 of QuickBooks, it is pretty familiar, with some added functionality that's welcome (such as the ability to customize forms and reports more).
However, I've tried registering the software, which you must do over
the phone, and it appears there is a bug.. The registration window has a nine-digit "serial number," but the gentleman on the phone wanted 5 more digits, a "group" number or something. Anybody else noticed this? (I tried on a G4 "digital audio" under 10.2.3, and on a beige G3 under 10.1.2 and 9.2.2; same result on all three..)
FWIW..
Andrew

| Reader Feedback on Pioneer DVR-105 1.21 Firmware Update |
A reader sent a note that the 1.21 firmware update for the DVR-105/A05 drive noted in the recent news didn't help with his media problems:
"
Hi Mike,
I flashed the Pioneer DVR-105/A05 with the new update using a friends PC laptop. (I have it in a external FW case) It took less than 2
minutes.
I have not done any extensive testing, but the 50 pack of Proformance
DVD-R's I have still will not work with it. Other media worked with
it, but I had hoped the firmware update would allow cheaper media to
work. I am annoyed as I cannot test getting higher burn speeds, as I
will have to buy some other media so see what will work.
Your readers with the Pioneer DVR-105/A05 should temper their
expectations. I wish I had.
Tom
"
Previous news pages here noted links to PC sites that have reported problems with some (usually lower cost) brands of media with this drive. (It was hoped the firmware update would solve that issue - maybe it does for some brands of low-cost DVD-R media)

| OS X 10.2.x/iTunes3 Support File for Plextor PX-W4824A (48x24x48x) CDRW Drive |
Dale Ghent sent a modified Plextor OS X 10.2.x plugin file edited for the Plextor PX-W4824A (48x24x48x) CDRW drive to enable iTunes/finder Burning support. The Plextor plugin file he sent replaces the one already installed by OS X (use Sherlock to search for the plugin filename location - very long path in OS X). OS X 10.1.x plugin files do not work with 10.2.x, so I assume the 10.2.x plugin files won't work if you're running 10.1.x.
Note: Like all 'unofficial' mod. files - they are provided as-is with no warranty or guarantee. (You can't replace the existing file under OS X due to permissions unless you use the terminal to enable root user, or do a get-info on the file to change permissions temporarily, or just reboot into OS 9 and replace the file.) I've also added this info/link to the FAQ's CDROM/CDR section for future reference.

| Quickbooks 5 Mac on shelves at Apple Stores |
| (from a reader email)
"Just wanted to give you a heads up that the Apple retail stores have
QuickBooks 5 ON THE SHELF as we speak. $299 for it (far more than the
equivalent PC version) and apparently that price does not provide the
updates for the payroll service nor the conversion feature for PC QuickBooks
files. Dave W.
When I first posted the news about Quickbooks 5 for Mac several readers wrote to say they wished there was more info on the product/features (I've not checked since then to see if the Quicken site or apple has more info now on the product.)

[If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.]
(Entries today will be added the following newsday. Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
