| Pre-Orders for G4/500 CPU Upgrade for PowerBook Wallstreet: |
|
A week or two ago there was a note here about OWC's pre-orders for Bluechip G4/500 upgrades for Lombard PowerBooks (1999/Bronze keyboard). Today a reader sent a note that OWC is taking pre-orders on the Wallstreet version:
"
Bluchip G4 for Wallstreet is now available at OWC for pre-order, $465. Previously, only the Lombard model had been available.
I saw this on their website. Scott Cavendish
"
Their more info page shows "9 days" until delivery as of today (the same note is on the Lombard version). I think the reason for the delay is trying to solve the issue in OS 9 where sleep was not supported with a G4 cpu in an older Powerbook. (Noted in a past news page here - comments from Powerlogix's president as to why only OS X was listed as supported with the upgrade in their original product page for the BlueChip G4.) |

| Final Cut Pro 3 Real-Time Effects Performance Tweaked Script File: |
|
In a follow-up to the article noted in yesterday's news about script tweaking to boost real-time effects performance, the author sent a note he's posted the original and modified scripts for Final Cut Pro 3.
"
Having recently found out how Apple controls the amount of realtime features offered for your machine in FCP3, by simply editing a script, you can now download both the old original version and the tweeked one on my Idisk.
The address is:
homepage.mac.com/a_holck/FileSharing2.html
The new script will simply remove the 'breakes' which restrict the level of realtime features on a particular machine.
There is no danger in doing this as you can always download the old script from my site to go back to normal, or you can back up the old file.
All you have to do is:
- Download the tweeked files from the 'old' folder on the above address.
- Copy it to the right folder:
On OSX:
- ctrl+click the 'Final Cut Pro' application.
- Choose 'Show package contents'
- Navigate to: Contents/Resources/English.lproj/FXScripts/
- Replace the old 'FCP RT Software DV Enabler' & 'FCP RT Software JPEG Enabler'
On OS9:
- Navigate to: Applications Mac OS 9/Final Cut Pro 3.0/Plugins/FXScripts/
- Replace the old 'FCP RT Software DV Enabler' & 'FCP RT Software JPEG Enabler'
Thats it!
Now you machine has no breakes, and you can stack 10 motion titles playing in realtime.
If your machine cannot keep up it will now drop frames but the timing will still be perfect!
To get them to play without frames dropped just render that part.
Anders Holck Petersen"
I've added the above comments/links to the original article for future reference.

| G4 Cube Owners CPU Temperatures (Dual and Single CPUs) |
| I've had several reports from Cube owners (dual and single CPU) to my request for CPU temperature tests (info on how to test in that post). There was a wide range of reported temperatures from the emails I've read so far. Part of the reason for this may be due to the fact the stock Cube heatsink adapter plate often has less than complete contact with the base (large finned) heatsink. (When I removed my plate you could see the foil/adhesive was making contact with about 30% of the total area.) There were two (rare) reports of Cubes with 7410 CPUs (not 7400s) - so their reported temperatures were very inaccurate (2 degrees C for instance). This same issue was noted earlier this year with GaugePro and other utils reading the 7410 CPU. (No Temperature utility is 100% accurate with G4s of any type - but of course 20+ degrees C below ambient room temperature is clearly way off base.)
One G4/500 Cube owner reported 80C readings during this test - very high. Most G4/450 and 500mhz (single cpu) owners reported temperatures in the mid-40s (C). (Highest single CPU report was 81C and one at 58C.) I've had a few dual G4 (Sonnet Duet mods) with an 80mm fan installed reporting temperatures in the mid-high 40s to in the 50-55C range. (Some earlier reports noted much higher temperatures however - but there's a lot of variation possible depending on the heatsink/adapter mods/methods used and the type/speed of fan installed.)
For my Duet/Dual G4 Cube mod, I used the Sonnet heatsink adapter, which requires removing the original Cube heatsink adapter and some careful positioning. It also results in the Duet card being stressed a bit (even after I removed the 2 rear hollow standoffs and added a rubber support at the card edge between the CPU module and the motherboard).
I ran the test 30 times and my Duet reported temperatures from 48C to 54C. I also played "the Matrix" DVD movie from start to finish and saw temperatures from 48C to 57C (rare peaks to 57C, generally from 48-54C).
When I first installed the Duet, I saw temperatures as high as 65C during the Fractal demo test - but I think after some use the wax-like thermal compound on the Sonnet heatsink adapter may have melted a bit and improved thermal transfer. (Had I to do it over, I would have removed that material and used Artic Silver on that area also. But I would also have needed to use a stong solvent like Acetone to remove all traces of the wax-like compound from the heatsink pores for best results.) I did clear the cpu contact points and the heatsink/cpu contact area with Acetone to remove any oils from handling before applying the Artic Silver II compound there.
I've got an adjustable speed 80mm fan in my Cube running at one of the lowest RPM settings, so I may adjust the speed up a bit, but so far I have seen no problems in several hours of continious use. The fan can be heard, but it's not that much louder than the one on the Radeon card in the Cube. The noise does not bother me (it's far quieter than a G4 tower.) It could all go up in smoke tomorrow of course and this mod voids the Duet warranty and the Cube warranty.
The internal temperature of the inside of the G4 Cube core with the stock CPU module (no fan) was higher than it seems now with the fan and dual G4 - but that's just based on initial observations. I was suprised at how warm the core components were when I first removed the core after running the G4/450 original CPU for several hours. (I've taken photos of the steps I used to install the Duet for posting a page next week.)
I do wish I had access to a machine shop/bridgeport to machine the Sonnet heastink adapter down a bit to reduce the stress on the card. (Or make a better heatsink adapter from scratch.) One reader noted he rotated the stock heatsink adapter plate 90 degrees and then drilled out a new set of holes, but my adapter plate had very deep/large letters/numbers stamped on it in the area where the 2nd CPU would be contacting so that was not an option for me.
For those using the small adapter plate mods (alum. squares) shown in the Duet/G4 Cube mods page here, I've added a note/link to an image that a reader sent where he had to cut out a corner of the original heatsink adapter plate to clear a capacitor on the Duet card. (The author of the Duet/Cube mods page here did not note doing this - so I'm not sure if the height of the adapter plates may help clear this component or not.)

Current total 5,963 reports. [Entries from today are added the following newsday morning.]
(Note - ** Please include your CD/CDRW Drive Speed in the entry **. And Please do not post questions in the database, use email for that and check the database and articles here for answers/tips/guides first. Incomplete entries, those with no comments, etc. are deleted.)
(Running late today and did not have time to itemize all new entries here, however latest reports are always shown first on searches.)
You can find full owner reports by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. [If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.]
