More Comments on AppleScript 1.7 (OS 9.2.2) Compatibility Issues:
(In reply to an earlier post from another reader earlier today)
"
I can confirm that AS [AppleScript] 1.7 that gets installed with Mac OS 9.2.2
indeed breaks a lot of file and path functions. AppleScripts that we've
used for years break as soon as we update to 9.2.2 and start working
again if we downgrade to 9.2.1.
There are some guesses on other websites about workarounds, but they're
undocumented and I haven't seen any that fix my problems. Apparently,
filename and pathname case has suddenly become important, but it didn't
work to fix my problems.

"
I asked John if it was possible to run the previous Applescript version with OS 9.2.2.

Reader Comments on Problems with Keyspan card/Palm Adapter in OS X:
"Hey mike, just thought I'd tell you of a problem that I've been
experiencing that I have succesfully cleared up.
I have a G4 500 DP (w/ the default RagePro AGP card) running
either 9.2.2 or 10.1.1 (or whatever the latest versions the two
software updates give).
I've been having cronic USB recognition problems with
my HP970Cxi and SCSI recognition problems with my
UMAX ASTRA2400S scanner under OS X, as well as weird Apple Profiler
reports under both OS 9 and OS X (things like parts of one devices'
description appearing in a different device, often from a different
I/O interface). Also my Palm IIIxe wasn't recognized at all under OSX.
FYI, (and it's germaine), my Palm cradle's serial had the DIN8 serial
adapter on it, which was in turn plugged into a Keyspan Serial to USB
adapter. ie. doubly adapted. This hotsyncs just fine under OS 9 but
is invisible under OSX classic. I am using the OS 9 and OS X Keyspan
drivers available last month (Nov).
Anyway, it seems that the vast majority of my problem were cleared up
by singly-adapting the Palm cradle with the Palm serial to USB
adapter (thus removing it from the Keyspan adapter).
After this, OSX sees my printer, my Palm cradle, and the scanner.
The 970 prints and the Palm hotsyncs in classic mode. However, it
should be noted that I still am having scanning problems, but
VueScanX seems to be able to at least partially initiate a scan now.
I say partially, because it hangs in the middle of scanning.
In addition, most of the weird device profile descriptions seem to have
cleared up. They're entirely cleared up in OS 9 and down to 2 in OSX.
Bottom line is OSX hates
Palm serial -> DIN8 Serial -> Keyspan USB
and OS 9 doesn't think too highly of it either, though it works.

Reader Comments on Sony FM Tuner for iPod:
"
Mike,
A few weeks back I asked you to ask your readers if anyone knew of a FM
tuner that could be added to the iPod.
Today, I found this Sony FM-Tuner Street Style headphones. By
themselves, they are Street Style (the band connecting the two ear
phones is worn behind the next, not on top of the head) headphones with
a built-in Digital FM tuner with 15 presets. They take their own
battery.
The cool part is that they have an input jack. You run a mini-phono jack
cable from the iPod to the headphones and rock out. Now I can get an
iPod.
The headphones list for $49.95 but I've seen them as cheap as $34.99 on
the internet. They come in silver or gold tone.

If any iPod owners have used the Sony FM tuner, let me know how well it works.

Reader Comment on OS 9.2.2 AppleScript Compatibility:
"
9.2.2 was a bit of a dissapointment on my PBG4. Applescript was updated
to 1.7 which means that most Applescripts involving disk activity now
fail to run properly.
In my case, this would be John Rethorsts excellent Ram Disk backup
freeware which is based on Applescripts. I use it to give my HD a rest
while the cache-intensive SETI screensaver looks for alien signals. BTW:
John thinks that Apple will fix most of the Applescript bugs in a future
release. In the meantime, my HD went back into full-work mode...
CvW"
I did not realize there was any applescript compat. issues after the update, but if other readers have noticed any let me know. OS 9.2.2 had a long list of updated extensions including ATI and Nivida drivers and OpenGL also. (I saw a huge improvement in available resolutions on a GeForce3 card after the update.)
