Flashing 5770 and 5870 Radeons for Mac Pro 2008 and later
(Follow-up to a post on in July 2nd news on Drivers for Radeon 5xxx series in new Mini OS X 10.6.4 image)
"FYI, was just checking out the Mac Pro forums on MacRumors and noticed that significant progress has been made in getting a PC Radeon 5770 working in a Mac Pro: Flashing 5770 and 5870 for Mac Pro 2008 and later
Towards the bottom of pg 1 The Rominator got his 5770 partially working with a ROM from netkas, which was ripped from a 2010 iMac. There also appears to be a hacked together 5870 ROM from netkas for The Rominator to try.

However, netkas mentioned that EFI32 support doesn't appear to exist in the ROM, so it most likely won't work on 2006-2007 Mac Pro's. But it would make a good alternative for the 2008-2009 models if 1) Apple overcharges for the upgrade cards yet again, or 2) Apple restricts the 5770/5870 upgrade cards to 2010 models (either through a firmware or physical modification of the card, or no official support for it, a la 4870 in 2006-2007 Mac Pro's which did work).
Regards, Philip T."

iMac C2D (3.06GHz) vs Core i3 (3.2GHz) Pure Benchmarks comparison
"Core 2 Duo vs. Core i3 (Pure) Benchmarks
I just ran a few quick benchmarks on the new Core i3 3.20 iMac with ATI 5670 graphics. I ran tests with xbench, Geekbench and Cinebench and compared them the benchmarks I ran against the Core 2 Duo 3.06 with ATI 4670 graphics. All benchmarks were run three time on both systems from a clean boot and the results were averaged.
Overall the Core i3 looks like a definite winner for performance. In my tests the new graphics card did not shine but I have a feeling if I had run some gaming benchmarks it may have done better. (XB graphics benchmarks are not worth much IMO (too limited/light-weight), real world tests are much more useful/stressful.) Also, the new unit appears to have a slower disk or slower SATA interface according to xbench. (Considering it's XB scores, the less than 10% difference wouldn't bother me. (Assuming both drives are similar, similar free space, etc..) Maybe try some other BM to see if it's still lower. Is spotlight still indexing? any other background tasks on the new model.)

Here are the numbers. -Don"

Not sure if the new iMac had the 10.6.4 update applied, which had some ATI driver updates and fixes reportedly. And the later CineBench 11.5 has a bit better graphics benchmark than the older CB R10.
