| ElGato Turbo.264 v1.1 Update |
ElGato sent a note they've posted Turbo.264 v1.1 Update:
"Elgato Turbo.264 Software Update Version 1.1
Adding iPhone Support, Customizable Settings, and Much More
Elgato has released a free software update adding a number of new features to the Elgato
Turbo.264, a hardware video encoding accelerator in USB stick format.
Elgato Turbo.264 now supports iPhone video, offers user-customizable
settings for video conversion, and enables manual selection of sound
tracks from DVDs. Furthermore, this free update to Turbo.264 version
1.1 includes improved widescreen detection, performance improvements,
and a number of bug fixes.
...Two iPhone presets follow Apple's recommendations; 4:3 source material produces 480x360 pixel video,
16:9 source is encoded as 480 x 270 pixels. Elgato Turbo.264 1.1 offers more than just two iPhone presets,
however. By popular demand, users can set, save, and name their own presets. Users can choose video parameters such as size, aspect ratio, frame rate and bit rate, as well as audio encoding parameters, and save those settings for future exports.
Many DVDs have multiple audio tracks. With Elgato Turbo.264 1.1, the
user can easily choose the main feature and choose the sound track to
use in the improved Info dialog.
Widescreen format feature films are sometimes encoded on DVD as 16:9
video with horizontal black bars at the top and bottom (letterboxed).
The Elgato Turbo.264 update recognizes such content and automatically
offers "Widescreen" encoding. When this option is active, Elgato
Turbo.264 encodes only the actual video information, resulting in
smaller files sizes without compromising picture quality.
In addition, the free update offers numerous improvements and bug fixes. Encoder firmware and software decoder optimizations lead to
improved performance, higher video quality, and improved stability. Auto-detection of 16:9 sources was improved, and some problems
decoding 1080i HD sources were fixed."
I've added this to the previous page here of Encoding Speed Tests with Elgato Turbo.264 Hardware Encoder (G4,G5 & Intel-Cpu Macs) which used v1.0.1 software.

| Request for help w/Sonnet D400 (Ext. 4-drive SATA case) Failure |
| (from a reader mail, later updated with notes repairs may be covered under warranty)
"Question for readers...
Mike, I've a Sonnet Technologies eSata drive bay D400 (4 drive, non-
PortMultiplier) chassis that is over a year old. I've populated it with four 500GB drives. I rarely turn it on, as it mostly for archiving. Add to that, the LEDs on it are so bright that it lights up my home office at night!
This weekend I discovered that the last update of OS 10 (10.4.10)
seemed to mess with the driver from Sonnet. (Some earlier 10.4.10 reports here mentioned
getting a beta firmware update from them to address controller card issues in 10.4.10)
I checked their site, downloaded 2.1.1 of the E4P card I use to connect to the chassis
(via 4 esata cables). After rebooting, the card was recognized but not the D400.
Then I noticed, there was no fan noise or drive noise, for that matter, coming from the chassis. It appears the power supply failed on some level, even though the LED's were lit. (does it use a std format (mini ATX?) power supply Any fuses inside that could have blown?)
I am waiting for a reply from Sonnet. I feel in a bind as Sonnet no
longer sells this model, nor can I locate it on the net, for cheap. Any Xlr8yourmac readers familiar with it? (likely OEM'd from another company and sold under other 'brands' also, although it may be no longer made) Also, I've found
that Sonnet only sells a newer version of the 400 populated with drives. Again they have changed the model, along with their 5-drive PortMultiplier chassis.
Anyone have an feelings about this chassis/product if I can't get a
part from Sonnet? http://www.pc-pitstop.com/sata_enclosures/scsat05pm.asp
This would free up my E4P to do Port Multiplying...or allow use of
the 3 remaining ports. And far cheaper than other chassis options...
Thanks for any help. I'll reply if I hear from Sonnet's support.
(He later wrote)
I received reply from Sonnet. However, they want invoice to see if it
is under warranty (purchased in March 2006) and not utilized till later (no drivers for
Mac Pro & E4P card till 4th QTR). They are surprised it died so soon. So am I. So am I. I only have email order info from PC Mall...
If they can't fix it, or can not offer me the option to buy replacement powersupply, I'll look elsewhere. Might give the unit to my brother. Maybe he can rebuild it...
Sincerely, Ed S."
If anyone has used that 4-drive chassis or has a repair tip for Ed, let me know.
