Crucial pulls standard FB-Dimms from Mac Pro Compatible listing
" As of 6:00 pm EST, Crucial's Memory Advisor tool no longer takes you to the previously-mentioned FB DIMM page. Instead, it shows this message:

"We're Sorry!
No products are currently available for the system you selected. Your system may require proprietary or non-standard parts..."

It seems that they've realized that the flat heatsinks on the DIMMs may not be within Apple's specs.
-Derrick "

After getting this mail and checking the previous links here, I removed them for now. I've written a Micron contact to ask if they plan to offer them in the future and if the removal was due to the apple notes on heatsink/fan behavior, or their own tests. (See their reply in Thursday's news.)
Other companies may be working on large heatsink FB-Dimms for Mac Pros, although as of mid-August 2006, only OWC is shipping Mac Pro memory with large heatsinks (1GB, 2GB Dimms). Update: On August 25th, Transintl announced their Large Heatsink Mac Pro Memory.

GeekBench results of Mac Pro vs Quad G5
GeekPatrol has posted GeekBench results w/Mac Pro (2.66GHz) vs a Quad G5. Both systems had 1GB RAM. (So no Quad channel config in the Mac Pro, although memory bandwidth often isn't a big factor in many real world apps, but Geekbench is more of a pure benchmark, like Xbench.)

Skype/Skype with Video Beta Updates for OS X
Matthew called to say Skype (Beta) 1.5.0.60 and Skype w/Video (Preview) 1.5.0.61 were released today. The Change Log lists reduced CPU usage for the Video version and a long list of bugfixes for the non-video version.
BTW -Despite download dmg filenames, the actual versions in the downloads were reversed:
" hi, the folks at skype mixed things up:
Skype_BETA_1.5.0.61_Video_preview.dmg contains version 1.5.0.60
Skype_BETA_1.5.0.60.dmg contains version 1.5.0.61
I downloaded the video preview version and was puzzled where the video was...
then installed the regular beta 1.5.0.60 - get info and About Skype both show 1.5.0.61
-Jeroen "

The downloads were reversed as of appx noon Eastern today, but may be corrected by the time you read this.

Mac Pro's extra 2 SATA Connectors on the Motherboard
Apple's Introduction to Mac Pro Developer Note mentions in addition to the 4 SATA drive connections, there's "two unpopulated 3 Gbps SATA buses for expansion". I wonder what they will be/could be used for in the future - maybe SATA Optical Drives? (Routing them to external ports would be nice but unless a cabled PCI slot end bracket was used, it would require a case mod. BTW - some Cabled PCI brackets like this one a reader linked to has cables too short, so make sure you buy one with very long cables.)
Halfway down the page at Powermax's Mac Pro Take-Apart is a motherboard pix that shows what appear to be the 2 extra SATA connectors in the upper right area of the photo.

More info on OEM Mac Pro Memory
Further to the discussion on Mac Pro Memory (and its large heatsink) - PowerMax's Mac Pro Take-Apart has photos of the OEM memory modules and riser card. Their Mac Pro had OEM (512MB) modules and the memory in the photo has a Nanya label. (Apple often uses more than one source for Memory so not all Mac Pros may have Nanya memory, although several Mac Pro owners noted theirs was Nanya, one mentioned his system had Micron memory.) The last digits of the P/N was blurred in photo of the label, but I think the full P/N was NT512T72U89A5BD-3C. Here's a page of Nanya specs on 512MB to 2GB FB dimms, that includes that module P/N. The PDF download at Nanya mentions it has a CAS latency of 5 and includes overtemperature detection and alert.
Page 25 of the PDF shows the module/package dimensions but doesn't reflect the same (tall/finned) heatsink as on the Apple shipped modules. (Yesterday news had a copy of Apple's memory note that says a special heatsink was used to require less airflow and minimize fan speed.)
FYI: Apple also has added Mac Pro FB-Dimm info to their Memory Developer notes which mentions the FB-Dimms' Advanced Memory Buffer (AMB, does serial/parallel conversion) runs at 4GHz.
As mentioned yesterday, some vendor's Mac Pro memory pages like Crucial's showed basically flat heatsinks on their FB-Dimm photo, although they cost less than RAM with larger heatsinks like OWC's Mac Pro memory. (Update: Crucial link removed because they no longer list Mac Pro compatible RAM.)
If any Mac Pro owner uses FB-Dimms that do not have large heatsinks, let me know if you notice higher fan speeds than with the OEM memory. (I'm personally not that sensitive to fan speeds/noise within reason, but I lost count of the total number of G5 tower owner mails over the years about fan noise/speeds, often due to addon cards (PCI bay fan speed was determined by power load, not temperature), power manager/settings/OS X update quirks, etc...)
