| Reader Notes iBook Just Received from Apple Store included 10.2 CDs |
| (from a reader email today)
"Hello, I just wanted to email you to let you know I encountered something rather interesting. My brother received his new iBook today from Apple, and upon opening it there it was a packet with a giant Furred X on it. Mac OS X 10.2, the upgrade CDs. The machine itself was running 10.1.4, apparently Apple is throwing in the upgrade CDs with new machines.
Jaguar consists of 2 upgrade CDs, one is apparently the system, the other
the new Applications.
It's fast...super fast.
Cheers,
Christopher Joy"
I asked what build it was and he said "6C115".

| Status on 1GHz PowerLogix CPU Upgrade in Cube: |
I had hoped to have some results of tests of the Powerlogix 1GHz G4 in my Cube today, but after running a long series of tests (OS 9/OS X apps/games/benchmarks) with the Dual G4/500 Cube Saturday, installing the 1GHz module that night showed the Cube core will not fully seat back in the clear housing. (It's about 1/8" or so from fully latched in - some sort of interference with the module installed. It's not clear why this happens - the module fit well in the core, was straightforward to install, especially using PL's installation QT movie.)
To keep moving forward with other Cube testing for the review, I reinstalled the original G4/450 module for tests which took most all day Sunday. [Note - this was not an assembly issue, or core/housing issue - the DP500 and original G4/450 modules dropped right in the housing - only the 1GHz module/heatsink assembly had the problem. Many wrote to ask if I had checked this/that or the other thing in the assembly of the core - that was not the issue. It was 100% correctly assembled (I've had lots of practice since last year) - this was just a fit issue with that particular 1GHz module/heatsink adapter.]
The 1GHz upgrade tests will be delayed until I can find a solution for the core fully seating back in the clear housing. I discussed this with Powerlogix over the weekend and they are going to get back to me today about this. (Powerlogix later requested I return the upgrade so they can compare it to other/later made samples there.)

| Article on Using External IDE CDRW Drive to Early iMac |
Another reader posted a drive database entry noting mods to use an IDE CDRW Drive (Sony CRX175AI in this case) with an early model iMac using cable mods to use the drive externally. Although this has been described in comments to past reports, this reader created a web page with info and links to photos on the modification.
(FYI - The slot loading G3/350 and up iMacs have only one IDE bus, Hard Drive is master, CD is slave on the one cable, so you can't add another drive without disconnecting the original CD. The iMac 233-333MHz models had two IDE busses - one for HD and one for CD, but the CD is a notebook type.)
As mentioned in the FAQ's CDROM/CDR section for the modified plugin files - it's often easier to just boot into OS 9 to replace the plugin file to avoid permissions issues, rather than use the OS X terminal commands, etc. (New users to OS X may find that simplier than using the terminal commands.)

| XPostFacto Updated to 2.2B16 (OS X on Legacy Macs Utility) |
| Ryan Rempel has again updated Xpostfacto (over the weekend). Version 2.2b16 lists the following changes:
Fixes a problem which prevented some of the kernel extensions from loading properly in 2.2b15, which could cause a kernel panic early in the boot process.
As noted on Friday, Ryan also said "it looks as though XPostFacto will be working with Mac OS X 10.2 (aka Jaguar), which is scheduled to be released on August 24. One known problem with Jaguar relates to systems which are still using their original 603 or 604 processor. It is unlikely that this problem will be solved before the 24th."

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. [If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.]
(Entries today will be added the following newsday. Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
