B&W G3 Owner w/G4 CPU Upgrade Notes DVD Studio Pro 1.5.1 Update Won't Run
[Update - for a reader's tip on fixing the problem noted below - see Wednesday's news]
(from a reader email in reply to an earlier news item on DVD Studio Pro 1.5.1 update)

" DVD Studio Pro 1.5.1 upgrade on OS 10.1.5
The installer would not recognize my Newer Tech G4 450 upgrade in my B+W. It complained about "DVD Studio Pro only supporting G4 processors " then it would make me cancel out with out installing.
I haven't tried it on OS 9 yet.
    (name withheld by request) "

I assume he had a working v1.50 installed and running previously. If any other G4 upgraded older Mac owners see this let me know. (I don't know of any "wannabe" or "wish I were" utils for OS X to get around this.)

Airport Base Station (Dual Ethernet) Firmware Update 4.0.6
Macupdate today lists an Apple Airport Base Station Firmware X 4.0.6 for the Airport base (latest "snow" colored model, not for the original "Gray" model). Changes listed are:

" This firmware is required if you are using Rendezvous-enabled applications in Mac OS X v10.2.
Note: Mac OS X v10.2 includes this latest version of the firmware. No update is necessary if you've already used the AirPort Admin Utility from Mac OS X v10.2.

    What's New:
    Version 4.0.6 adds the following:

    • The Airport Admin Utility has improved scanning for base stations across local subnets. This improves the ability for AirPort computers to find base stations while plugged into the LAN port.
    • Compatible with Internet service providers or other home router products that use private 10.0.0.x or 10.0.1.x addresses in bridge mode.
    • Compatible with Rendezvous-enabled applications in Mac OS X v10.2.

    Requirements:
Mac OS X 10.1.5 or later and the Networking Update, AirPort 2.0.4 software. "

EyeTV 1.02 Software Update Released
Joel Mueller of MacUpdate sent a note that they have the EyeTV 1.0.2 Updater listed today. (A reader also sent a direct download link - www.elgato.com/support/eyetv102.hqx.) An EyeTV owner recently commented on using a beta 1.2 version, his comments are on the EyeTV feedback page.
"EyeTV 1.0.2 Updater adds the following:
  • Tuning issues with certain cable television providers
  • Some users have reported that EyeTV is unable to pick up any signals at all or only one station on their cable feed. EyeTV's auto-tuning scheme has been updated to include two other NTSC cable channel assignment schemes, IRC and HRC. If you are encountering this problem, simply run EyeTV's Setup Assistant again (from the Help menu) or go straight to EyeTV's Preferences, in the Setup tab.
  • EyeTV Helper: The EyeTV Helper launches EyeTV automatically when the device is connected. This helper is now copied to /Library/Application Support. Any entries in Login Items pointing to a Helper inside EyeTV itself should be deleted automatically. EyeTV Helper now has version number 1.0 and an icon, so it looks prettier in the Login Items list. We also fixed a bug which should prevent the deletion of all login items.
  • Improved channel listing: The channel list in the preferences has been improved. Option-click to enable/disable an entry. Autotune no longer deletes channel names. Channel names must now be deleted by clicking on Clear Names. We don't throw away the Antenna list just because you choose Cable, or vice versa.
  • Cable channel 1 enabled: Tuning to Cable channel 1 now works, assuming your cable provider uses that channel at all, and the content there is not scrambled.
  • Cosmetic fixes: Program/Recording Info dialog is 18 pixels wider to accommodate 4-digit year preferences.
  • Overall stability improvements: Various hanging/crashing bugs have been fixed. Error messaging has been improved.

Requirements: Mac OS X 10.1.5 or later. "

DVD Studio Pro 1.5.1 Update (Updated for Install/SN Notes)
Yesterday a reader sent a note that Apple has a free DVD Studio Pro 1.5.1 update for v1.50 owners that notes the following changes/fixes:

" This free update to DVD Studio Pro 1.5.1 addresses these issues:

    • Incorrect A.Pack monitor Sample rate
    • 24-bit AIFF files contained digital noise
    • Macrovision APS bits
    • Setting SSCRST with CPSEC and PES bits when writing DLT tapes
    • Region 7 setting flagging as playable
    • Improved stability for DVD-ROM burning

Before you download: Check the minimum system requirements:
    * DVD Studio Pro 1.5 or later.*
    * Mac OS 9.2.2 or later, or Mac OS X v10.1.3 or later.
    * A Macintosh with a PowerPC G4 processor and an Apple-supplied AGP graphics card.
    * 256MB RAM, 512MB recommended.
    * For writing to disc: Apple SuperDrive, DVD-R recorder, DVD-RAM, or DLT tape drive."

Although the download form does not require a DVD Studio Pro 1.5 Serial Number, a reader noted that after the update you have to re-enter your S/N. He also noted that the updater only seemed to work if DVD Studio Pro was installed in the /Applications folder.

" I just wanted to note that there is no need for a valid serial number when downloading the DVD Studio Pro 1.51 update (which is strange, because every other update required one). However, you will need to enter your serial number when you first run DVD SP after updating to 1.51.

Also, I've found out that the installer will only update DVD SP applications which are located in the /Applications directory. I had moved my DVD SP installation to another partition, and when I ran the updater, I got a message in the installation window saying "Could Not Find DVD Studio Pro 1.5 in the DVD Studio Pro Applications Folder. Please Install Before Updating." After moving it to the Applications Folder, it saw it, and updated fine.
Thanks again for a great site!
    Carl Acampado "

Another reader replied to this post saying he did not have to enter a S/N again and didn't need to have DVD Studio Pro in the /Applications folder:

    " Mike,
I had no problem upgrading my DVD-SP 1.5 to 1.5.1, no need to reinstall the S/N. I'm wondering if Apple is doing a Mac Office X S/N weed out. My version is legit and does need to be in the Applications directory prior to updating.
    Lee"

But if his S/N wasn't legit (or was on some check list) then I doubt it would have been accepted at all.

If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. [If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.]
(Entries today will be added the following newsday. Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
