| OWC Sales on G4 ZIFs, Apple ROM CDRW, DVD-RAM drives and SuperDrives: |
"
Hi Mike,
We have four specials for the XLR8YourMac readers that I wanted to tell you
about-
First, we are excited to have our own line of G4 ZIF processors available
again! These have been testing absolutely fantastic, every one I have been
testing has run perfectly overclocked to 450 or 466 in a beige/B&W. Of
course we are not guaranteeing them to overclock, but the odds are
excellent.
OWC Mercury G4/400MHz Motorola 9x ZIF w/1024k 2:1, Adjustable, 2yr Warranty (Z4400MA) more info... $249.99
Or, bundled with the XLR8 Carrier Card for use in PCI based Power
Macintosh/clones
XLR8 Carrier ZIF Adapter & OWC Mercury G4/400 1024K Cache 9X ZIF Bundle (XGZM4400) $349.95
And, we have some awesome deals on Apple original system pull CD-RW, DVD-RAM and DVD-R drives. The SuperDrives are limited availability - first come, first served, but the first two drives we have very good stock on.
Apple Computer 8x4x32 CDRW - Sony Mechanism, System Pull, Excellent Condition. 90 Day OWC Warranty (APLCDCRX140E) $89.95
Apple Internal DVD-RAM 1X for the Power Macintosh G4 AGP Apple Service Part
# 661-2162 - 90 Day OWC Warranty (APLSV6612162) $224.99
Pioneer DVR-103PA - Apple Computer System Pull. 4.3GB DVD-R - Excellent condition! (APPLESUPERDRIVE) $699.95
Have a great holiday weekend!

| Cool PowerBook G4 X-Ray Desktop Picture: |
"
Hello Mike,
I thought perhaps you might like the picture in a better quality (a few more kilobytes ;-) (he later wrote with a new link with blue, gray and green versions of the xray)-Mike)
http://www.skohls.de/pics_tixray/index.html
I found this a while ago on the web (but can't find the site again)
Someone with access to a high resolution digital x-ray machine took the picture and published it. I made a few adjustments in Photoshop and fitted it as a Titanium desktop picture.
Best regards,
Stephan" |

| PowerBook Internal Battery Disconnect Didn't Solve Firewire Port Problems: |
Since there were other readers with the same Firewire port problems with their PowerBook G4s as mine (nothing works - not even Firewire target disk mode) I wanted to note that disconnecting the internal backup battery overnight did not solve the problem. I can only assume this is a hardware problem. (I tried all tricks possible to no avail. - resetting power manager, zapping pram, resetting open firmware, etc. and nothing has helped.) Removing the internal battery for several hours fixed the same problem with a G4 Cube here but not for this Powerbook. Looks like it's going to take a warranty repair. (Apple's hardware test CD does not find any problems, but it really doesn't exercise the firewire port apparently, since it's clearly not working even in Firewire target disk mode connected to another Mac.)

| PCworld Article on Failures of IBM 75GB Drives: |
Over the last year I have seen some comments on the web (PC forums, etc.) about higher than expected failure rates of some IBM 75GXP drives. I have 3 of them and none have had a problem so far (the oldest is about a year old). I don't think the drive database reports here note any trend like this either. However there's a PCworld news story from yesterday that talks about failure reports on the 75GB models. The article says IBM denies there's a problem. (The article notes "7500 rpm" but the drives are actually 7200 rpm.)

| Comments on nForce Motherboard in Future Macs: |
|
Back on July 25th here I had speculated that the Nvidia nForce (integrated motherboard with high speed IO, advanced audio, onboard graphics etc.) might make its way to future Macs after seeing that Apple (and nVidia) were part of the HyperTransport Consortium. A reader sent a comment from a PC website that also hints at this possibility:
"
I was reading an article at firingsquad.gamers.com/hardware/nforce/default.asp [link corrected]
about the forth coming Nvidia nforce
chipset and surprised by the following paragraph.
This was taken directly from the article:
Future platforms
Since it's based on the GeForce2 MX core, nForce's integrated graphics
fully supports Apple's big endian byte ordering scheme. When we
questioned NVIDIA if it was possible we could see nForce in the Mac,
NVIDIA answered in the affirmative. In fact, the mobile space is another
area NVIDIA would possibly explore in the future.
Thought I would let you know!
Doug T.

| Blast from the Past - News pages from 1, 2 and 3 years ago: |
|
I've had several readers ask that I restore a news item that I used to call "Blast from the Past" where links to past news pages from a year, two years, etc. ago here are included in the daily news. (Sometimes these old pages are a bit embarrassing - and in many cases the offsite links may not work, and comments there were accurate on the date posted regarding upgrade availability, etc.)
