ATI Comments on Driver Update for Warbirds III:
(Update - The filename of the ATI drivers was changed since yesterday - the link below has been corrected - thanks to Curtis for the heads up.) Yesterday's news had an update last night that noted beta drivers for ATI graphics cards for use with the latest Warbirds III game. An ATI employee wrote with comments on those drivers:
"
Hi Mike,
Saw the note on your news page, and I thought I'd try to fill in any blanks.
Like the release note says... These are unsupported beta's.
I think the ATI web site should have these today as well. I believ that
there is also a build coming which will not require the newer OpenGL.
The drivers posted represent a beta of our most recent version. They have
not had extensive QA done on them, but provide a bug fix for an issue that
was holding back the WarBirds release, and are believed to be relatively
stable.
The other release (coming today I believe) will not require the newest
OpenGL, but represents the WarBirds fix being applied to a version that is
several months old (which will not perform at the same level as the newer
release). The older release has been thoroughly tested, but not with the
new fix added in.
Hope this helps,
(ATI guy's name withheld)
"
A complete list of the ATI extension versions is noted in this forum thread here from a reader.

As of 11:30 AM EST, the ATI Radeon drivers page did not list anything later than the previous 1.1.1 driver release. (As of 8:30 PM EST still no update there.)

Comments on Latest Warbirds III and Online GamePlay:
Last night's update to Wednesday's noted a new version of Warbirds III was available. A reader sent comments on the game/gameplay:
"
Mike, I have played Warbirds for over three years now and there isn't a
flying sim that can match it on the Mac. As previous comments have
alluded to, the warbird team have been very good as helping address
problems as the programme has developed.
The latest version issued yesterday (01.August.01) is getting better
all the time and it is still only a beta. I'm running a 9600/200 with
xlr8 G3/400 ZIF card (faultless, really excellent products) with
288Mb and ATI Radeon. Frame rate is 15-20 which is not fantastic but
hey, once you're on-line in a squadron chatting away on a
mission..well.. real escapism. In addition, the support from the
network of trainers and organised scenarios is what makes it unique.
No the product won't come in some fancy plastic packaging, you won't
see unattainable screen shots advertised in the comics, but you will
get a great set of people and atmosphere on-line.
And thanks for a great site,
Paul
"
If you missed the news last night, they're offering free on-line play for the month of August. The notes on the new version is here and direct download links to the 080101 version (and ATI driver udpates) are in the above news item.

ATTO SCSI cards and OS X Support:
After a reader's comments in one of today's Drive Database entry seemed to imply that only Adaptec had Ultra160 speed SCSI cards with OS X support (although problems were noted in that report), I emailed ATTO tech support to verify their past comments about OS X with their SCSI controllers.
"
Mike-
All of our ExpressPCI SCSI adapters are compatible with Mac OS X. The
driver is part of the OS X distribution CD-ROM. If you already have Mac OS
X loaded on your computer, simply install your ATTO host adapter and it
should recognize it immediately.
If you have additional questions, feel free to e-mail me directly and I can
set you up with our technical support folks.
Best Regards,
-Peter J. Donnelly
Product Manager, Host Adapters
ATTO Technology, Inc.
"
ATTO's Ultra3 cards have been noted to perform very well based on some past owner comments before OS X was released. (Some say their Ultra3 card is faster than the Adaptec Ultra160 cards.)

Using an Apple Newton PDA with Palm Desktop:
(I think one of Barney's other net news links recently noted this article but just in case)
"
Since Apple's Newton PDA continues to maintain a sizeable core following
of dedicated Mac users, I thought this would be of interest to your
readers: PalmOnMac.com has posted a step-by-step tutorial detailing how
to sync a Newton with Palm Desktop at
http://www.palmonmac.com/article.php?sid=33. The information presented
in the tutorial allows Newton users to take advantage of the freely
downloadable Palm Desktop PIM application, as well as maintain a
consistent set of data between their Mac, Palm handheld, and Newton.
Thanks!
Scott
