Hardware Monitor/Temperature Monitor utilities updated for 2010 MacBook Pro Support
Here's the change list for Hardware Monitor v4.9. (Some items like support for new MacBook Pros/Mobile Core i series CPUs are common to other utility updates below.)

"Release 4.9 (Build 100419)
  • Added support for the new Intel Mobile Core i7-600, i5-500, i5-400, i3-300 processor series ("Arrandale").
  • Added support for the new MacBook Pro (2010) computers.
  • Added new feature to detect if a processor supports Intel Turbo Boost technology. The list of supported overclocking frequencies can be displayed in the "Processor > More Info" sheet of the System Information window.
  • By user request, the splash window being displayed while the application is starting up can now be suppressed.
  • By user request, the sensor window will no longer resize itself to show all configured sensor values when it is being opened. It will keep the previous size preferred by the user until it is being reconfigured.
  • The command line version of the program will now use the special output value "-" to indicate a sensor which has been detected but cannot retrieve any values at the moment."

MacBook Pro (Nvidia 8600M) GPU Failures/Repairs page updated
I've added 2 more reports to the original page on MacBook Pro (Nvidia 8600M) GPU Failures/Repairs (ref: apple's extended GPU warranty). Includes another report where not giving up after an initial refusal ('not qualifying' per USB drive test app) got the repair covered for free. The other report (unlike many) noted he still had a month left on Applecare.

Apple Headphones with Remote Replacement Program
Saw this mentioned in a wired article. Here's a link to apple's page on Apple Headphones with Remote Replacement Program and a clip from this doc noting affected S/N ranges, etc.

"Apple has determined that the Apple Headphones with Remote included with the iPod shuffle (3rd gen) may fail under certain conditions. A very small percentage of iPod shuffle owners have experienced this issue. These headphones were included with the iPod shuffle (3rd generation) made between approximately February 2009 and February 2010.

If your headphones stop working or work intermittently as described below, Apple will replace them, free of charge, for two years from date of purchase.

    Symptoms

  • Controls are non-responsive or work intermittently
  • Unexpected volume increase or decrease
  • Unexpected playing of voice feedback

.... Serial number ranges of the iPod shuffle with the covered headphones:
    xx909xxxxxx to xx952xxxxxx
    xx001xxxxxx to xx004xxxxxx

How to find the serial number on an iPod shuffle.

(this note is bolded in the Apple doc)
Note: Apple In-Ear Headphones with Remote and Mic and Apple Earphones with Remote and Mic which exhibit the symptoms noted above are also covered under this program...."

  • See the apple doc for info on using the Online Service Assistant to begin the replacement process.
