Adaptec 2940UW SCSI Upgrade Tutorial - System Preparation
Remove the case cover

Of course the first step is to remove the case of your Mac. Ensure that the Mac and any attached devices are off. If you use a outlet strip to power the Mac, turn it off also.

For 8500 and similar Apple Towers, a photo of the screw locations is here. For PowerTower Pro owners, there are two thumbscrews at the right rear of the case (facing the back of the case) that retain the side cover. You simply have to loosen (8500) or remove (PTP) these screws and remove the case cover. For 8500 & similar models, carefully slide the cover forward and up and off (I find that bowing the case out at the bottom slightly helps in removal and re-assembly). For PTP owners, just remove the two thumbscrews at the rear of the case edge and pull the side cover rearward to remove it.

Static Precautions:

Always touch the metal power supply case before touching anything in your Mac.

Once you attach the wrist strap to yourself, attach the other end to the metal power supply housing (in the case of the typical disposable straps , there is a adhesive coated copper strip for this purpose) or in the case of the permanent wrist straps, to a metal part of your Mac chassis. This connection ensures that your Mac and you are at the same potential.

Discharge Thyself!
I always leave the Mac power cord attached, but in reality it does not matter as long as you and the Mac are at the same potential. I also use a large anti-static plastic floor mat at the Mac workstation. These mats are a good protective measure during daily use and cost as little as $15 at Sam's clubs and similar outlets.

Once you've ensured that you are properly grounded with a wrist strap, and have touched the Power Supply metal case, we can proceed to the next step.

Locate Free PCI slot and remove it's rear slot cover:

Locate an available PCI slot on the motherboard where you can insert the 2940UW card. Consider the routing of the SCSI cables in determining which slot to use.

If you have a Powerforce G3 CPU card installed, it has been suggested that you install the 2940UW card in the closest PCI slot to the CPU card.

Once you've determined which PCI slot will hold the 2940UW card, you must remove the rear slot access cover to allow it to be installed. The PowerTower Pro uses a PC Style screw retained slot cover as shown at the right (save the slot cover attaching screw - it will be used to retain the PCI card later).

The Apple Mac's typically use plastic tabs that must be gently pressed out to allow the slot cover to be removed. Apple typically does not use screws to retain PCI cards or covers, relying on the plastic spring tabs for this. Be careful, I've broken one tab off my 8500 already from repeated removal and installation of PCI video cards. (Another reason I prefer the PowerTower Pro case.)

Note: On most Apple Tower Mac's (85/9500) - you must depress and lower the Cpu card Latch to have free access to the PCI slots. (Not appl. to the PowerTower Pro).

Now that we've got the PCI slot ready to accept the card, we can proceed to the next page of the tutorial where the card is installed.
