Security Update 2005-009 On Nov. 30th, 2005 Apple released another security update for 10.3.x - see the linked pages for change info.
I've installed it here and so far haven't seen any problems. (One reader mentioned problems after updating that were fixed by reinstalling it from a download version. Another reader said he's had several problems since the update including problems with Entourage X/printing - Creating a new user acct and logging in as that new user shows no problems so it must be some issue with his original user prefs/files.)

Reader Reports on 10.3.9: (most recent first except for replies/updates to previous reports.) I welcome feedback on 10.3.9 (if you find it fixes, improvecs or breaks anything) let me know. Include Mac Model info and details on any 3rd party software/hardware in reports. Thanks.
Note: 10.3.9 adds burn support for the Matshita UJ-845 (slotted dvd burner)
according to mac user reports in the drive database here. (Still no iApps burn support for
the Pioneer DVR-109 or later (110, 112, etc. so patchburn3 used. Tiger/OS X 10.4.x however has iApps burn
support literally any DVD/CD burner according to reader feedback.
More feedback on Java update for 10.3.9 fixes (OnDemand VPN Client) I mentioned in the news last night that although I didn't have java broken in 10.3.9 (on 2 systems), the Java Update for Mac OS v10.3.9 fixed the Maps.google.com duplicate directions text in Safari 1.3. A reader sent a note about other fixes he saw after the update:
"
The Java update appears to have corrected several things. My company uses a product called Aventail OnDemand which is a Java Based VPN client.
Since 10.3 it has worked on and off again as Apple progressed
through system updates. It did not work in Safari under 10.3.8 or
10.3.9. It worked using Internet Explorer in every 10.3 version. I
installed the Java Update this morning and tried the VPN client again
and now it works fine in Safari under 10.3.9. I have always sent the
bug report to Apple whenever it didn't work ...

Java Update for Mac OS v10.3.9 (4/21/2005) Matthew called with a heads-up on the update available now via Software Update (or you can download it from this apple page). Here's the info from Software Updates:
"
Java Update for Mac OS v10.3.9 v1.0
This update will correct issues affecting some Java users following the installation of Mac OS X v10.3.9 Software Update.
For detailed information on this Update, please visit this website:
http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n301382"
Even though I didn't have the Java problem after updating to 10.3.9 (I won't repeat all the tips/fixes posted here in the last week), I applied the update and ran Safari to check a bug I'd seen in v1.3 previously at maps.google.com (duplicated 'from here' and 'to here' text) and the update seems to have fixed that.
Previous Tips for Fixing 10.3.9 Java Problems:
I previously posted some tips for those with Java problems after the 10.3.9 update. I didn't have the problem on 2 macs but more than a few readers did. Most said using the tips mentioned of either reinstalling Java using Pacifist or reinstalling the 2005-002 security update helped, but this reader mentioned prebinding problems was the original cause:
"
Hi Mike,
for some reason prebinding isn't done properly after the 10.3.9 update; that resulted in a broken java. As I said, on my machine applying the 10.3.9 update after the security update 2005-002, which alone solved the problem, resulted in an Illegal iinstruction of java (the 10.3.9 update alone brings it to Segmentation fault).
Forcing a prebinding (from the terminal):
sudo update_prebinding -root / -force
solved the problem. It will be interesting to check the forced prebinding on systems affected by 10.3.9 but without successive reinstallation of the Security update 2005-002.
Regards, Sam
"
(Utilities like Cocktail and Onyx can also do prebinding.) Many other readers later replied this did fix the problem, without needing to reapply other updates, etc. as in previous tips, although 2 readers said they still had a "hotspot" location error and needed to use one of the previous tips (i.e. install security update 2005-002) to fix it.
(4/15/2005 tips) After getting several mails from readers with Java problems w/10.3.9 I wanted to post a quick note with some tips that may help.
I updated 2 systems to 10.3.9 yesterday and have not had any problems (yet at least). Here's my terminal check results under 10.3.9 (using the java -version command)
java version "1.4.2_05"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_05-141.4)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2-38, mixed mode)
Here's some tips to try if you have java problems after the update.
(Update - Monday's news and an even simplier tip on fixing java in 10.3.9.)
- Two readers have said reinstalling Java 1.4.2 pkg using Pacifist (available at www.charlessoft.com) fixed the problem.
- One reader said reinstalling the 2005-002 Security Update (java related) and then installing the Combo 10.3.9 update fixed the problem. However another reader later wrote the Security Update alone fixed it and if he reinstalled 10.3.9 it was broken again, so he reinstalled the security update again. (Several other readers later said they just used the Security Update 2005-002 alone to get Java working again.) One reader said the Combo update alone did not fix it, not sure if deleting the prev. java receipt would have mattered. The combo update should include all updates for 10.3.x, although in the past I've seen a combo update not include a security update.
I'm not sure why some have seen this problem and not others (not me on 2 different macs) but hopefully one of the above tips will help those that have a problem.
Also a FYI that I've gotten more reports on Safari 1.3 (from 10.3.9) compatibility problems with 3rd party plugins/addons (not just Acidsearch, but others like WebDevAdditions.) If you have any Safari problems try removing any addons.
(4/19/2005) Apple has posted a knowledge base doc titled Java and Safari issues after updating to Mac OS X v10.3.9 that has some tips for that problem that were already posted here a few days ago, except they didn't mention using Pacifist to reinstall Java 1.4.2, which worked several readers said, unlike trying to reinstall it with the apple installer a reader said. (Perhaps deleting the Java 1.4.2 receipt would help if using apple's installer.)
The Apple kbase doc however doesn't include the force prebinding tip here in Monday's news which may be the root cause of the problem and is the easiest fix usually. (Many readers noted that fixed the problem and is the first thing to try - if that doesn't fix it, try one of the earlier tips like installing the 2005-002 security update, etc.)
AcidSearch 0.34 Hangs Safari 1.3: (Update - as of 4/18/2005, the author has posted a v0.4 update to address this.)
I don't use this plugin but posting as a FYI:
"
Hi, after the (10.3.9) update I tried to start Safari but it crashed.
After some investigations I've found the problem: the AcidSearch plugin, located in /Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/
Removed and trashed the plugin and Safari was back up and running. Long life to Safari.
Luca P.
"
I verified he's using AcidSearch 0.34, the latest version as of today at http://www.pozytron.com/?acidsearch. Several other readers later reported the same issue with this plugin and problems with some others like WebDevAdditions and Safaricon with 10.3.9's Safari v1.3.1. If in doubt, try removing any 3rd party addons.
I welcome other feedback on 10.3.9, let me know your experience with it.
