AirPort Extreme Update 2008-002 for OS X Tiger - Spotted this at Apple's site:

"About AirPort Extreme Update 2008-002
This update is recommended for all Intel-based Macintosh computers and improves the reliability of AirPort connections.
System Requirements: OS X 10.4.11"

In the past, some AE updates for Intel-based Macs had updated N adapter firmware (file loaded from disk, not flashed into adapter). I'm running Leopard on the only Intel-based Mac here, but if you see any pros or cons from this update let me know.

Looking for more feedback from Mac Pro owners using spare SATA Ports w/External Drive - If you're using the Mac Pro's Spare SATA ports with an External drive, let me know the details, including ext. case/drive model and if you've had any issues or not. Thanks (Looking to update previous page here on the subject after a Lacie quad-interface drive problem report this morning.)

Last spring I posted a page here with Mac Pro owner's notes on using the 2 spare onboard SATA Ports with external drives via the NewerTech cable kit. (It was updated a few times including a tip on a driver change/update for Windows support.)
Although someone had mentioned using a Quad Interface EliteAL pro case OK last year, this morning I had a 2008 Mac Pro owner (running 10.5.4) write about problems he had with his LaCie d2 Quadra 1TB drive (current firmware per Lacie Update tool). He had used it via FW800 port OK, but after booting with the Lacie drive connected via eSATA port, he had a crash after trying to access the drive via SuperDuper! ('smartbackup' attempt) and afterwards attempting to boot with the eSATA connection fails. I sent some suggestions to try (and suggested contacting Lacie support) but since even some ExpressCard SATA users have mentioned problems with some multi-interface bridge board/cases I thought I'd ask for feedback from any reader using the spare Mac Pro SATA ports with an external case. (eSATA cases are cheaper and less likely to have issues, although multi-interface drives are attractive for use with computers that do not have eSATA).

Temperatures of Mac Pro 8800GT w/stock cooler vs (Fanless) Accelero S1 Rev 2 - Earlier this month when I posted John's notes/pix on a Nvidia 8800GT w/Accelero S1 Rev 2 cooler, I asked if anyone had run stress tests/compared temperatures with the fanless S1r2. (An earlier article from a Mac Pro owner on another brand of passive cooler had mentioned high temperatures during heavy use.) Today Oliver wrote with initial notes on temperatures of the Accelero S1r2 without fan vs. the stock 8800GT cooler in his Mac Pro:

"Temperatures of Nvidia 8800GT w/Accelero S1 Rev 2 cooler vs. stock cooler
Hi Mike, Today I put the GeForce 8800 GT back in my Mac Pro (replacing the Radeon HD 3870 review sample), booted Windows Vista Business 64-bit, started the Riva Tuner monitoring tool, and then opened the 3D Window of ATITool, which shows a rotating fur cube, which is quite taxing for the video card.

    - With the stock cooler, the GPU temperature rose to a steady 83 degrees Celsius in less than 5 minutes. (The fan spun at about 2700 RPM and was clearly audible, with the case closed, standing on the floor beneath my desk).

    - With the Accelero S1 Rev 2 and no additional fan the GPU temperature rose to a steady 74 degree celsius in 30 minutes. That's with the case fans at default speeds.

Ambient room temperature was 25 degrees Celsius BTW. I must say that I'm impressed!

I might still get the optional "Turbo Module", as I have only one other PCIe card in the Mac Pro (top slot), so I can afford to block a PCIe slot. And the cooler the equipment the better.
    Cheers, Oliver"

I asked he report back if he sees any issues in longer-term use. (I've also updated the Accelero S1/R2 article with Oliver's comments.)

Have you had a MacBook Pro GPU/Video Failure? - A reader with a MacBook Pro (17in/HD screen) wrote venting some frustrations over his recent (apparent) GPU failure. He had seen some random screen artifacts, lines, faded text, etc. that had went away with a reboot in the past but now nothing helps, including resets, booting from OS X Disc, etc. (and no ext. display video either, so not just a backlight problem). Luckily he had AppleCare, as it's just out of the std 1 year warranty but he wanted to warn anyone else that's got a MBP that has seen issues to go on record with Apple support before the warranty expires.
There's been complaints over graphics issues/bugs, etc. for some time in Apple's MBP discussion forums (and some threads on no video like this one with a couple hundred replies), as well as other graphics/GL bugs that are not MBP specific. A reader had also sent a link (javascript reqd) to a google spreadsheet with over 90 reports from MBP owners w/no video at boot, but of course there's been many thousands shipped.
A certain % of anything will fail (sometimes infant/early failures) but some think there was a potentially suspect batch of Nvidia GPUs (although I think more likely some variation in assy build quality/heatpipe mating (efficiency) perhaps if it's heat/cooling related) - I remember the posts here and elsewhere on the first gen MBP's heatpipes having thick gobs/slabs of thermal paste (not ideal...). If you've had a similar failure with your MBP, let me know the details. Thanks. (I've gotten about 1/2 dozen replies from MBP owners today, ranging from first model to recent ones...)
